I just bought a new 2008 Ranger. Reading the manual it tells me that my maintenance schedule should be 12,000 Kms or 6 months. The local Ford dealerships(3) have told me 8,000 Kms and 6 and the other 2 said 5000 kms and 6 months.

Anybody know what the real schedule is???

Check with 08limited, he had the same questions when he purchased his '08

Its 12,000 km
I have checked with my dealer
And he has confirmed it
I do my every 10,000 km
all Ford vehicles 2008 and up will be 12,000 km interval oil changes

I would never let my oil go more than 5000 Kms especially with the tight tolerances of todays motors, keep it fresh keep it clean keep it a long time

BTW welcome to ford tough

This was brought from Ford to us so they could compete with imports
If the manual tell you Max 12000 km or every 6 months I would stay below it, and you will be fine

Little scary that Ford adjusts their maintenance schedule to "compete with the imports":icon_eek: and not because of some new mechanical advancement. Stick with the 5000km schedule!!!:icon_rolleyes:

You can never do to many oil changes
I do mine every 5000 km. Tire rotation every 10,000 km. Lincoln pays for it so why not

Thanx for the help!! I guess we think alike, I to, am not comfortable with a 12,000 interval. I'm thinking of cutting it in half to 6000.
Does anyone know of any articles on line that I could read up on this new interval?

I remember reading awhile back that Ford was coming out with this but never much attention to it. I would like to get some "independent expert" opinion on this.

Thanx again for all the help.

Not really, what if sensor fails?

My advice is to test the oil after changing to determine which interval is best, for example 08limited may drive 10 times the milage I do. This means the 10000-12000km interval works for you, but me that would be 1 oil change per year..........not good.

Test the oil? How would I do that? What am I testing for? Viscosity breakdown?

Condition, local big truck dealers usually have machines on hand to test.

The oil is the life blood of the engine...the oil filter can only do so much! On my oil VW Golf, I used to do the oil change 3 and 3 (3000 KM and/or 3 months) and it lasted 13 years with no engine problems....I figure that the cost of the oil change is peanuts in comparison to the cost of engine damage down the road....maybe this is Ford's new bailout plan!!
Just a thought......

Interesting topic.

I went back to my '03 Ranger Maintenance Guide to see what it had to say.

It has a "required" maintenance schedule of 6 months/10,000 km for oil and filter changes, and multi-point inspection and tire rotation - not too much of a difference from the '08.

On the other hand, there is the "recommended" service interval for oil and filter change of 3 months/5,000 km.

The fine print (under "Special Operating Conditions") specifies the more frequent maintenance schedule, and in my experience, almost everyone qualifies under "Special Operating Conditions" according to the "real-world" conditions under which they drive.

I can see the manufacturers extending the change interval to compete. I can also understand how they would artificially extend the interval because they offer "3-yr. free oil and filter changes" or other such promotions.

I DON'T see that the newer engines/vehicles are so substantially different that they can just extend the service interval without any basic changes in the materials, design, manufacturing, metallurgy, etc. from what was offered just a few years ago.

On the other hand, it gives the manufacturer an "out" when you bring your vehicle in for warranty work and they tell you that you don't qualify because you maintained your vehicle according the "scheduled" maintenance, but that you were driving under "Special Operating Conditions" (i.e. real world conditions).

I agree that you have to tailor your maintenance to your own schedule, but you won't go far wrong if you maintain it "better" than average.

For the record, I change my oil and filter every 5,000 km like clockwork - I even go the extra mile and use synthetic - truck has almost 300,000 km on it with no serious engine work so far.

Changing your oil regularly and frequently is the best thing you can do for your engine's longevity. Price of an oil change won't even fill up the tank, and is just part of the cost of driving.

On a final note, don't you just love how your engine just sounds better after an oil and filter change?
