Anyone have one, specifically the type that exits in front of the wheel?
I'm contemplating changing my stock Harley exhaust for one... comments?

I just bought 18"x6" round magnaflow, and a 16"x3.5" 45 deg slash cut magnaflow tip. Took it to muffler shop, took old muffler and tailpipe off, welded on new muffler, bent a peice of pipe to come out in front of tire at 45 degree, welded on tip but twisted 90 degree, makes the tip come out flush with box. Cost bout 100 for muffler and tip and another 60 for the install. Before installing the tip, i spray-painted the inside with black stove paint. Sounds awesome, especially when it echoes of a building or when passing a car. I'll try to post a pic. Should be one in my vBGarage.

I believe lightning25 is running the exact system you are asking about.

i hear that running the exhaust that way can pit the rear wheels and damages the tires ,not too sure how true this is tho, im also interested in getting a roush side exit exhaust

Heard that rumour on another site, but the end result is that the side exhausts are fine, wheels/tires are okay and mine is in the garage waiting for my return.

I have only heard it makes the rims/tires more dirty.. :icon_confused:

lumberjack just had a custom install on his truck..
Magnaflow muffler and side exit put on his truck.. I don't think he has drove it much to tell about pitting on the rims etc. yet..

Read about all the 'cons' about side exhaust on other sites and although there are differing opinions, and so there should, the end result is that the majority of comments that I read were positive towards the side exit exhausts, Bassani, Magnaflow or whoever.
Only time will tell with mine.

im going to be running the jdm/kooks exhaust that uses magnaflow mufflers dont know what it sounds like but im after the performance from the set up

the wheel thing was because it would turn the plastic hubcaps yellow and in some cases eat the finish off (clearcoat) makeing a mess but i believe there was a catalytic converter issue with the early 97/98's with this exhaust setup and if you took it in they would re-rote the tailpipe....

my buddy used to have the exhaust exit infront of the back tire and it did end up making the rim really dirty ,he ended up cutting the exhaust back so the tip ended up ferther into the undercarriage

just for the heads up this place has wicked deals on roush exhaust http://www.woodhousestore.com/servlet/Categories?category=Roush%3AExhaust&searchpath=31011&start=17&total=32

yes it was the 97-98 that had the side exhaust exit before the tire and the issue was the chrome on the rims was to thin turned yellowish ford came good for it and replaced the rim on that side, not on my truck was on my dad's truck, thats what the dealer told us anyways was a rim issue not the exhuast.

I have the kooks long tube with the magnaflow on my lightning. Loud did I say loud. On the #1 going how at about 90 k, I hammered it, dropped two gears ( something i have not done with this exhaust before) and the resulting exhaust BLAST was so loud, I thought I had an explosion in the blower. Never will do that again, next time I will turn off the od first. I should know better.

Going to change to something a little quieter.

no sound clips... You may just be able to hear it if you step outside.... :) I'll find out the type as they came with the truck. not something I would have put on myself.

When the '97 F-150's were introduced, they all had the exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheel. I'm pretty sure they did a recall and replaced it with a full lenght tailpipe. I know there was an issue with scorched plastic centre caps on the wheel, but I didn't hear of any tire/wheel damage.
I can tell you that a stock exhaust can discolour chrome bumpers...both my Ranger & F-150. :icon_rolleyes:

Actually it was on the 97's and early 98's the issue was the rear wheel was turning green because of the exhaust, and it was only fixed if you complained about it to the dealer

the fix was a new rear rim and a new tail pipe exiting behind the wheel

Have chrome mags instead of the painted SVT rims. no discoloration, yet.

don't make it quieter. just add some sound deadener to the inside so its quieter for you but still loud as hell outside for everyone else. That's what i did.

I read somewhere that having the exhaust in front of the rear tire will cause moisture, freezing during winter months which may cause failures to seals, pre mature erosion to drums,/ disk and its compoments , but it looks awesome in my books

I had 5 rims replaced on my 97 because of the exhaust pitting the rims. I never had the relocation done because I had a Borla. I have that same Borla on my 2000 and the wheels need to be kept clean or they will pit. In my situation, over 220k, at least there is no problem with moisture affecting the brakes or seals. Although my polished rims do have to be polished more often. :icon_lol: A plastic coated aluminum rim or chromed rim should be washed more frequently to remove any acid from the surface. The Acid formed from the exhaust is what pits/dulls the rim.
