$36 they do all the work and some more, once you price out your oil/filter and disposal it is much easier to hand the keys and say "here, you do it"

Installed Fomoto valve last year and I've always done my own. Costs me about $70 that way. Dealer charges about $140 and I would trust the Lubex monkeys with me diesel.

The 6.0 psd's only need oil changes every 12k. I do mine at 10. Mine's an 04. I don't know what the interval for an 08 SD is.

I did my 2nd oil change and then realized.. It was only $45 @ my dealer.. plus they check it over.. (1st on was free :icon_wink: )

I've always changed my oil on prior vehicles.. but this way my warranty is protected.. and it's basically the same amount..

$35?!

Cripes. You must have slave labour in Ontario. It would cost me $90 to get an oil change done at the dealership here in Alberta. Oil and filter only cost me $40 dollars so I do my changes myself every 5000km just like the book says. I keep all my receipts though, just in case the dealership wants to quibble over my warranty status.

Cheers,
D.

Well, Al told me when he bought me my Bronco for xmas, that it is up to me to do my own work. So therefore, I do my own oil changes, and everything else too. I used to always do my own oil changes, but increased income and laziness allowed me to let a local 10 min oil change place do them (for about 8 years now). Good guys, fellow 'wheelers so i was getting ok discounts and they always did a little extra work on the truck so it was fine, but since switching from cheap ass PetroCan oil to Penzoil with a bottle of Lucas (only way I've found to shut the motor up), I'm going to have to start changing my own again. It gets really expensive with the extras. LR

My changes run me $130.00
Only use Amsoil 5w20, K&N Filter, dealer hoists the truck up and changes for $20.00.
Every second oil change costs me $210.00 as I change my fuel filter every 2nd.

You do realize that your allowed to do your own...as long as you keep receipts and keep records of it. I would rather do it myself..(thats the mechanic in me i guess) Also, if you do, do it yourself, spend the extra cash and get good oil..don't buy that shitty "cheap" oil. it's like buying the ecomony brake pads from Crappy tire, and expect them to actually stop your truck/car.

LayinHp
09-30-2008, 12:27 AM
if your talkin about lubrico then just the reciets wont work its right in the contract must be changed by a qualified service center and signed by them/stamped... then u fax a copy or keep them then show proof if somthing goes wrong...

ford warrenty u can do it on your own and keep the reciets for proof

my last oil change i did myself, cause the dealership wouldn't make an appointment for the oil change and insisted i use the fast lane thing, i went 3 days in a row with a 4 hr waiting line, and the day after that i was going on a trip to ottawa that was a solid 1500 kms total. which would've put me far over the 8000 kms interval.

Dealer does mine for warranty. 14'000 now.

I would take it there even if i was out of warranty.

1' Free Coffee.
2' Hand keys over, Handed keys back.
3' Ops the drain plug came loose or filter spun off. New engine please!
4' Full Multi-Point Inspection with data sheet inc Brake pad wear etc. They also clear the service light.
5' Dealer Stamp for Full service history can get warranty if over the Km's a little.
6' Dealer Stamp can help re-sale.

$60 .... Cheap compaired to the UK. My old man had a Nice Jerry C180 Merc. £270 for the service, £9 for the copper washer on the drain bung ha ha.

What Oil do you need to use?

I've done all the oil changes on my Ranger except for the first couple, which the dealer did.

Fast lube and dealer "quick oil change" rates seem pretty reasonable for what they do, and they check other things while your vehicle is in.

I do my own because a) I like to make sure it's done right, and I'm pretty fussy about my vehicle, and maybe most importantly, b) I'm lucky enough to be able to use a friend's shop (and hoist, and tools, etc.) in "off hours" - and all it costs is a couple of occasional "24s" or "40s".

At any rate, the most important thing is that THE OIL (and FILTER of course) GETS CHANGED - hopefully within the recommended change interval.

P.S. I have to agree with TOPH R - "there are a lot of dumbass oil change monkeys . . ."

i do mine myself. my buddy had a bad experience with his car at mr.lube, they forgot to put his oil cap back on, lost a bunch of oil and blew his engine. then they said it wasn't thier fault.. he took them to court but nothing happened and he had to buy a new engine. ever since then i do it myself. but trying to get to my oil filter on the 99 f-150 is a pain in the butt! almost worth getting someone else to do it for me. but i like doing it

Truck's too low now to get underneath it. Too much hassle to jack up on stands on my own.
Found a service tech at Ford who has great work ethic and very respectful towards my truck, knows his stuff too.

I stroll in and check out my underbody when on the lift too.
I take my own supplies, Ford only charges me about 25 bucks, sometimes free!!

We patronise the local Jiffy Lube. They offer full synthetic...
I usually work away on plans or e-mails on the BBerry respond to calls etc. while they work.
They do a bang up job and it free's me up 20mins or so of time to tend to bussiness.

I got the maintenance package crap from Ford when I bought the '09, and they figure that 8k is fine between oil changes. Fine, I guess I can live with that. Its still a good deal for what's all included.

However, since I have a permanent 1200 lb hemorrhoid stuck on its arse and I tow the quad trailer a fair amount (around 1500 lb - a lot of extra weight for a little V6), I've been changing the oil myself in between at 4000 km; good peace of mind. If it doesn't see any hard work besides going to work and back I'll just let the stealership do themselves at the 8k mark, but if its getting worked good then I'll take pity on it. Other than that Ford can work on their junk, I've seen enough of the undersides of vehicles to enjoy doing it anymore. LR

I usually like to do it myself to save money. Mostly I run synthetic, due to the harsh climate in my area, so I try to stock up on Mobil 1 synthetic when it's on sale. The oil change places charge way too much for synthetic. So, for about half of what Great Canadian Oil Change charges for a regular change, I can do it myself and use good synthetic.

But this last spring I stopped off at a Mazda dealer in Edmonton on my way back from Utah to get an oil change and have the 24K inspection/maintenance done. I figure it's good to have someone else check things out once in a while, in case there's something I didn't notice. Also, I wanted them to check out what I thought was a differential seal leaking (heavy oil coating one of the front axles), which I spotted the previous time I changed the oil.

Maybe if I lived in the big city I'd take it to the dealer. Mazda only charges $36, I think. That's about what it costs to do it myself. Unfortunately the closest Mazda dealer is two hours away. The closest one I'd *actually trust* is seven hours away.

Not sure what the details are regarding your statement above.

I can speak from experience tho.

When I bought my F150 from Fraser Ford; they informed me after the deal that I will receive 3 years free oil changes from them.
Those freebies were used up till I moved a distance away where it no longer be worth my while to get the free oil change.

Not sure why your being charged $45 .. if you have free oil changes.

With my truck i get free oil changes for life of the vehicle. I questioned the sales guy and service manager about it. I asked "what if i come here every month to change my oil?" The SM said yep, you can do that if you want too.

Well I have always changed my own oil, but know I have a 2010 f150 I may see what the "free oil " change is all about, if they think there gonna charge me to do a " free oil " change than the dealer is in the wrong and will have there hands full, as my dad & brother & sister have also bought from the same dealer.

I do my own. I make a day of it. It's only 4 days out of a year. Gives me a chance to catch anything before it gets to be a big expense to fix. Check both diff's, t-case, trans. Grease all the fittings. Check the brakes. Look for loose bolts, worn mounts, cracked springs, brake lines, electrical connections and the like. Gives me time to do the extra fluid changes, like transmision or brake fluid if they need it or a fuel filter.
