Hello all. I'd like to get your impressions of the 2008 Ranger 2.3l for gas mileage and acceleration. I have a 9 year old 3.0l Ranger that I want to replace with something more fuel efficient.
If you have any other observations about this engine, please post them.
Thanks.

IMO. the smart thing to do is stay small. A good friend of mine had a 2.3L 07 Ranger XL, he said it was a good truck for its size. He got rid of it for a 08 XLT, ouch! he calls me once and while to ask me how I can afford gas for the 5.4L. He wishes he stuck with the ranger.

That's what I was thinking. My truck has over 220,000 kms on it. The engine is great but isn't the best for mileage. It's time to get a new one.

This isn't the my truck, but it is otherwise a duplicate. I picked it up at noon. It's the 2.3l, a/c, cloth seats and new truck smell. :icon_lol:
No particular reason to post. Just glad to have received it.

I'll be happy with 35 mpg highway. I only got 25-26 mpg with my 3.0l. I live in the country and most of my driving is on county roads and highways.
WRT options, I got air and cloth seats - that's it.
After a few days of driving it, I've noticed that it revs higher than my 3.0l. It is slower from 2nd to 3rd gear and the signal switch is real high on the column. I'm not used to it being so high. The seats are harder but that could be that they haven't been broken in. It's quieter than my old truck.
It has less gauges. My 2000 Ranger had oil, battery and temperature gauges. The 2008 only has a temp gauge. The "Oh Sh!t!" handles in the cab are a nice touch. I need to get mats for the floor.
I got the basic AM/FM radio. It's butt ugly and I can get a better AM/FM with CD after market - without the Satellite. Future Shop or Best Buy have good radios for $100 to $150.

cant argue with 35 mpg's. the 4 banger's put out decent power in a reg cab. keep us posted with progress as she breaks in.

Thanks.
I had the bug shield installed this morning at the dealership. They didn't have one to put on last Friday. I know this next part has been discussed to death here and other forums but I asked the service guy if they recommended synthetic oil after the break in period. I figured he'd say yes but I was wrong. He told me with today's engines, it wasn't needed. That surprised me.
I must be getting old, but leaving oil in an engine for 12,000km before changing it is hard for me to accept. I think what I'll do is what I did with all my other vehicles and drain the original oil out at 1,000km and put dino oil in.
Does anyone know why these newer vehicles are rated to go over double mileage before the oil is changed?

I was also surprised to see that the manual said first oil change was not due till 12000 K, however.. the salemen said the service department would be giving me a call around 5000k.
