Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and how to fix it (or how much its going to cost to fix)
I have a 2000 F150 xlt, I think the abs sensor is gone. Every single time I hit the brakes at all the anti lock brakes kick in.

Is the ABS light on? if so you could get the codes pulled and know for sure. If it's on that means the ABS system is disabled and the antilock shouldn't be kicking in. Just regular braking. that's about all i can suggest. sorry.

im not sure if theres a way to disable the abs system you could do that untill you can get it fixed....

i've seen that happen on a cavalier once before and i almost crashed into another car because it wouldnt stop, it had something to do with the abs module which isnt cheap, you can just disconnect the abs under the hood, i think its usually sitting underneath the master cylinder

I would like to just disable it but I have no idea how, and no shop in the area will do it because its required for safety if it came on the vehicle (although the inspectors would never check or know)

First you should scan the truck for codes to see what is going on, if it is a sensor there are four of them I believe one for each front wheel, one in the rear differential and a ABS speed sensor in the transmission, the front sensors for a 4wd at the dealer up here are about 180-200 each also I hear some aftermarket sensors are junk so beware although I am running aftermarket ones and never had a issue with them
Try here for parts better prices then the stealer-ship http://www.rockauto.com/
let us know how you make out

look in your owners manual, find the fuse for the abs and just pull it out, it should be in the power box under the hood it may even be labelled on the box but i dont think they labeled that one

"fixed" it. Problem with just pulling fuse is the ABS light comes on and wouldn't pass inspection. So, I pulled the fuse, then pulled the dash apart and popped the abs light out. Problem solved.

I never have had abs brakes on any of my other vehicles and honestly dont like them that much. Pulling the fuse simply disables them, I'd rather do that then spend $1000 I don't have on something I don't want.
As for selling it, I don't plan on selling it. I am going to drive this truck into the ground and if I did get rid of it, I would obviously either fix the brakes or tell the person I sold to.

Your little trick wouldn't fool me, lol
The ABS light has to light up when the truck is first started, if not then the buld is burnt or someone took the buld out... Bring it to a fly by night shop and hope you get someone in a rush

Yup, the one down fall of it but not all vehicles have ABS. Its an easy check to do, but I doubt they will check. The inspections out here in NB are pretty pathetic and done very quick since there are a ton to do (every vehicle must be done anually) and it is a very small dollar item for garages. Its $25 but a good chunk of that goes to the government. So, its usually a quick visual check of tires, brakes, suspension, and steering, thats it.
On the other hand my jeep with no doors almost failed because it had no doors...

they make you do inspections once a year? thats harsh.. in bc we only gotta do them if they're carrying other people, like as if it were a taxi, shuttle bus and such, or if you bring them from out of province but i think thats with every one isnt it? I guess if the cops being a **** he can make you do an inspection too... my buddy had to get one done the day he just put insurance on it and spent a week trying to put his tranny in (the guy is an idiot is why it took him so long)

yup every year, every vehicle and big ticket if you don't. Mechanics don't really care too much as its not a big dollar item for them.

well i guess it wouldnt be much money if its done yearly, unlike here where everyone leaves it till something goes wrong then they bring it into the shop to find out it needs thousands of dollars of work from neglect

Not a bad idea, but they go after modded vehicles. It used to be really bad but its getting better. Long arm lift kits, any custom suspension work, even big lift kits would automatically fail you. Tires that stick out past the fender at all, fail. I know a number of people that put there jeeps back to stock and left the sport as they were getting a lot of hassle in inspections and on the road by cops (who can order inspections even if you got one a few days ago)

fixed it, but truck failed for having a "aftermarket dual exaust" which they couldn't show me where it said in the book that you couldnt, and for having tinted side windows. Have a buddy knows someone that will pass me, no questions asked :) (as long as it is "safe")

When I broke my sway bar links my ABS was doing the same thing, check your stabilizer bar and links, maybe it's a front end issue causing the abs to act up. Even if you don't put you ABS stuff back to normal, it would be a good thing to look into.

Bringing this back from the past becuase I ran into a problem this winter and have been to busy to look into it.
When I pulled the fuse for the abs I lost my cruise control too. However, I have also realized that my 4x4 is not working anymore. The light comes on but it does not engage.
Now heres my question, can anyone confirm that the fuse under the hood controls the ABS, cruise, AND 4x4? If so, the issue then is the ABS which I am guessing is an (expensive) sensor issue. So it's either get it fixed or figure out a bypass/disable for the ABS.

Notice how it says maxi fuse 102 and it list ignition switch, allot of things run through your ignition switch that they don't list in the fuse charts, I ran into a similar problem with my alternator. Alternator wouldn't work and everything was fine turn out to be an ignition switch fuse that doesn't even list as part of the alternator circuit in the fuse chart but looking a wire diagrams I found the ignition switch fuse that linked my alternator to the problem. That's also why I finally install my gap guards, to stop blowing random fuses...lol
By the way shouldn't you have pulled the abs fuse inside the truck (central panel) fuse 25?
Common ABS/4x4 problems can be a result of a bad wheel bearing too, not something you want to overlook for to long if that's the case. Better to get it fixed right the first time then get stranded or end up in the ditch or a rock cut missing a wheel!

Just talked to a mech and he mentioned wheel bearing as well. Going to be taking it in today, only thing is it has passed 2 inspections (and a third one literally a month before the problem started). Right now I'm just trying to find out if the 4x4 and ABS are related or not. Thanks for the chart, good info to have on hand.

Oh, and I believe it was #25 in the central junction box I pulled. Only thing it says is 4 wheel anti-lock brake system module but I know it knocked out my cruise control as well.

And we were all wrong. The vacume line was getting pressure but not engaging the 4x4. The little pump thing at the end of the vacume line wasn't moving so the 4x4 wasn't engaging (could be put into 4x4 by crawling under the truck and moving it). $400+ part apparently.
