i don't think you "need" it. If the roads are that bad, i won't be travelling. and without it, my truck stays cleaner.:icon_wink: a steady throttle and some weight in the back has always done it for me. and the places i got stuck in, the 4by couldn't get me out anyways.

Well. you've seen some of the awesome off road pics here in BC. Maybe not a must have but definitely is if you like the backroad trails.

I was certainly happy to have it last winter. When I replace the Truck I will at the very least get AWD in my next vehicle. Not a must but it sure helps

One of the reasons for me getting a truck was it being a 4x4.
And as pointed out, it was VERY helpful last winter!:icon_wink:

I think it all depends on where you live and where you need/like to drive. For some in rural areas it is needed but if you live in a city it might not be needed, but does come in handy.

Wife and I are planning on leaving the GTA to a country home in the next couple years.
We're checking out everywhere. Gone as far as West Elgin to the west, Lake Simcoe areas to the north and as far as Bancroft and Quinte to the east of us.
I bought the 4x4 now and she'll get one when we move.

id rather have a true 4x4 then this crap they call awd u spin a little bit and it jams the front end in no wonder the explorers are bad for u joints. if your on a wet road take off and hit the white stop line an spin just about gives you whiplash when the front end kicks in rather have 2wd with the 4wd option then stuck in awd

I lived in Calgary until a few years ago and our house was at the top of a small hill. When I had a 2wd most winters I couldn't make it to the top even with weight in the back and would have to drive about 4 blocks to go around. Then theres having to stop then take off at traffic lights that are on a hill. Never had a problem once I got 4wd. It's not a matter of how bad the weather is but how well the roads are maintained.
Now I live in BC and our driveway has a good incline. If it snows more than an inch while I'm at work I can't make it up in 2wd unless I have a good head of steam which is sometimes hard to do since I live on side of a highway.

So although it may not be a necessity, it sure is nice to have. I'll never buy another truck without it.

While a 4x4 certainly does come in handy in an off road or deep snow condition, my AWD performed very well in the snow last winter and it is really good in very wet roads which have been abundant this summer. Each to his/her own I guess, but all my previous 4x4's that I've owned were never used to their full advantage so I would have to answer, no it's not a 'have' item.
