View Full Version : Some Mods I have been up to

Last year when I re geared my truck to 4.56's and put the Detroit locker in I noticed the one of my axles had a wear mark on it from the bearing so I priced out axles from ford and they were too much up here so I found some Yukon axles from Complete off road http://www.completeoffroad.com/ (I can tell you these guys are unbelievable to deal with too)that are 25% stronger then stock and are made from 1541H steel, then the wheels started turning and I always wanted to do a rear disc brake swap Go figure I have a 1998 truck and Ford started putting rear disc's on in the 1999 model year

so the fun begun.....

So, first I ordered my axles
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture016.jpg

and was happy to take these off and get some good brakes finally

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture039.jpg

and when trying figure out if I could just swap the drums and use the ford set up I discovered there were 3 different bolt pattern's on the axle flange ... so I decided to order a kit from TSM manufacturing http://www.tsmmfg.com/ and be sure the then was going to bolt up but if any of you know me well, lets just say I wanted more, so I decided to swap out the brake booster from my '98 and put in one from a '03 F 150

notice the difference here the 97,98 vacuum booster is about half the size if the 99 + up booster and the piston in the master is 1+1/16 on the 97, 98 vs 1+1 3/16 on the 99+ booster
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture080.jpg

a better pic of the 2003 booster and master Cylinder I used

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture006.jpg

so then while it was apart I decided to put S/S braided lined all around

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture012.jpg

and since the axles were out I had to change the wheel studs so I opted to put in 14mmx2.0 studs instead of the 12mmx1.75 ones that came on the 97- mid 2000 trucks came with, just a little piece of mind when your tires and wheels weigh 120 pounds each

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture011.jpg

SKRWZ

That was a little PITA because after installing the studs in the rear axles I had to pull the front spindles off and knock out the 12mm studs and have the wheel bearings drilled for the new 14mm studs But I knew in the end it's all worth it

here's the difference between the 12mm to 14mm studs

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/IMG_2091.jpg

so now i still had a pile of parts

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture002-1.jpg

and it was time to pull the differential cover and the axles and while I was at it, I took out the bearing cap bolts and put studs in their place for a little added strength ..I love overkill
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture049.jpg
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/IMG_2104-1.jpg

then I disconnected the e brake cable's , pulled the backing plates, seals and bearings

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture055.jpg
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture057.jpg

Than cleaned everything, painted the rear diff with POR15 rust paint, and test fit the brackets before painting them with Black POR15 paint as well

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture068.jpg

then I installed new wheel bearings and seals

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture029.jpg

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/IMG_2084.jpg

When I got the kit I sent the rotors out to be Cryogenic frozen and slotted to macth my fronts I have

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture003.jpg

but when installing the kit i didn't like the way the rotor fit on the axle (kit uses a GM truck or Lincoln rotor and Cadillac El Dorado calipers) so I had some custom made hub centric rings and shrunk them on the result is a perfect fit

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/IMG_2093.jpg

so after I painted the calipers With POR 15 and installed the axle's and fit it was looking like this

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture121.jpg

SKRWZ
09-01-2008, 02:17 AM
And I decided to cap it off with a T/A Performance rear diff cover it has a stud girdle built into it and holds a little more Royal Purple as well

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture018.jpg

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture139.jpg

so now things were looking pretty good but i still had to bleed the brakes so I used some super blue dot 4 racing brake fluid it has a higher boiling point so hey I went this far right??

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture015.jpg

I also swung a deal on a set of traction bars and installed them while I was at it not only do they look cool but functional as well

here's a test fit pic before I painted them Black with POR 15

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture002.jpg

and before things were all done i checked my rear differential angle, something i always wanted to fine tune and I found it to be 4 degrees negative so I installed a 3 degree shim so it now sits 1 degree negitive....perfect for when I torque on it

Before shim
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture011-1.jpg

after shim
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/aftershim2.jpg

So this is what it looks like now.. the difference is like night and day

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Rear%20Brake%20swap%20and%20traction%20bars/Picture137.jpg

OK, so I finally had some time and installed the O/H console mod I've been working on, and I also recovered the saggy headliner too boot

this is the Grey console I installed a few years back,

O/H console's started in the 1999 model year so I was modding a past mod :)

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Steering%20wheel%20and%20%20console/Picture002-1.jpg

Now the one I picked up from E bay, it started life out as tan in color but after a few coats of Dupli-color Grey paint it was perfect

this is the modded O/H console with manual switches for E fans, trans fan, back up and driving light's along with a couple extra for future use
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Steering%20wheel%20and%20%20console/Picture030.jpg

and a night shot

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w88/skrwz/Steering%20wheel%20and%20%20console/Picture032.jpg

I also changed the dash lights and heater control to green LED for a cleaner look and changed the gages on my A-pillar

Damn, that overhead looks factory.. clean look man. what made you go green in the dash? great a-pillar too. do they create a blind spot when turning left? i like to sit back when i drive and i think they'de be in my way.

SKRWZ
09-28-2008, 01:19 AM
I drive with the seat back all the way and reclined, it's a little PITA but not to bad, I had the dash done in blue but it got old fast figured since the factory gage's are of a green hue I thought going green with the LED's would bring out the Gage color better

I hear ya that would be nice, but if I use it will most likely be on a motor with a few bolt on's if I don't I'll just sell it and just build a different setup no biggie

MJG
10-03-2008, 12:37 AM
If you do use it, why not do a good port?
Stiege is charging me 750 for the blower/tb/pl including shipping. you already have the blower, this route is the cheapest and works very well with boltons, rather than going fully built with a whipple/kd setup!
Not to mention it screams about 3x louder, and youshould get another 40ish HP. You already wil have to tune it when you install it, so have it ported beforehand!

Thanks for all the feedback, the steel hood is about 90 pounds vs the stock aluminum one that weighs next to nothing, some heavier hood shocks will be needed, right now the truck is at the paint shop getting the hood painted and a few needed touch ups done heres a couple pics before I took it in had to take off a few parts first

Update...... Well after I had the roof and the hood done I decided to go for it and have the rest of the truck done, so I stripped off a few more parts, originally the box was going to be painted off the truck but there was so much krown oil from 11 years of getting it sprayed it needed to be degreased so the box sides were just unbolted from the box and the box was painted in pieces

here's a few pics so far

Going with a 2003 H/D Grille and Bezel, just tossing up the idea of getting rid of the 98 4wd bumper or modding it to fit better or possibly, going with a 99- 03 4wd bumper I have a few other mods to go on as well, I'm still up in the air a little on a couple things

I forgot about this thread, any how after I painted the truck it was too cold to work outside on it so I ended up putting up at Jim's shop for the winter, (first time ever I took it off the road) anyhow after working a ton of hours this year I found time to get er dunn its almost done except for some odds n' ends I will get recent pics up soon but here's a few just before the flares, and final polish/waxing, and the rest of the trim went on, these are with the front end swap done

I'll get better pics later on

i think stripes make it different than every other 97-03 out there(and each stripe/stiker adds 5hp:))

Depends what your tastes are - the stripe package is distinctive, but I'd be more inclined to do without, but that's just me.

Great looking truck by the way, first I've seen of it, nicely executed.
