2008 60th aniversary f150
it has an 8 inch lift, dont know what manf.
and 37 inch tires. The spec sheet says it's running 3.73's, should i bring this up before i get the truck?
or is it ok running that?

A programmer would help but I think a set of 4.56's or 4.88's would really wake that puppy up and get it moving and most likely be easier on fuel as well

i was talking more in terms of physical stress on the drive line and gas milage, although a tuner would be great i agree.

Change it to 4.10 min for the price you are getting it
Truck will be sluggish with 3.73 and 37's
BTW
Did you take any pics?

IMO 4.10 wouldn't be worth the money you'd get a better bang for the buck with the tuner, I run 4.56 gears on a 35.5 tire it works out the same as running 4.10 on stock 31.5 tire's if I was to run a 4.10 it would be the same as the stock 3.55 ratio that came with my truck not enough to get it moving on 35.5 tire's IMO I would put minimum 4.56 in there it will preform better and be better on fuel as well

Have to agree with Dave 4.10 min and 4.56 ideal
It will be hard to get the truck going with 37's

IF this hasn't confused anyone enough if you were to use a 4.56 gear on a 35" tall tire it would be like ruining a 4.10 gear on stock 31.5" tires, so a 37" tall tire with 4.56 would be around a 4.00 - 4.10 ratio If you like gear you may want to consider a 4.88 ratio
and yes back to your othe question ...with the right gears would be easier on the drivetrain

IMO I say 4.56

ive heard multiple people tell me 4.88 for best gas mileage
this thing wont be an off road rig, just a mall crawler

4.56 would be good
are 4.30's available for the axle at all? They would probably be your best bet...unless your not going to be going on the highway often then you might as well go 4.56

4.56 are fine on the highway remember you have overdrive

im torn between 4.88 and 4.56
i have quite a few that said 4.88, but now im hearing 4.56
4.88 i heard is closest to stock
SKRWZ

The differnce between 4.56 and 4.88 is about 200 RPM @ 100K What tire and brand are on the truck you want, are they a true 37" and what is the stock tire size and gear ratio that came on the truck ??
here's a couple links to check out to give you some infromation any questions just ask

OK, I imagine the truck stock has a 3.73 gear ratio and 275/55/20's are 31.9" tall so @ 100k youll be about 1650 rpm
with 4.56 gears on a 36.8" tall tire (KUHMO) @ 100k youll be 1749 RPM
and with 4.88 gears @ 100K youll be 1871 RPM
The closest to stock gearing would be a 4.56 if want a little more oomph out of it go with the 4.88's .....
Hope this helps

I'm still having trouble with this gear thing
People say 4.53
and others say 4.88
I want the best mileage/power in a simple answer..lol sorry if i sound stupid to anyone. its just i only have one chance and i wanna pick the right gears
fordtough.ca
09-22-2008, 04:44 PM
Go with 4.53
the best highway milage, and a bit less power than 4.88, but way more than 3.73

Ok, we've hit a few snags.
It turns out the gearing wont be free after all. My guy says that the shop never put it in before because the cost was too high.
So at the end of the day he said it would be 2800$ (15 hours of that is labour) to do both front and rear gearing.
But he said i would only be paying about 1200$. So thats more then half which i am ok with. But 15 hours to do both..does that sound right to you guys?

I took it for a test drive today, the first lifted vehicle i've ever driven.
Let me tell you, the fact it was brand new.. and the fact it was 8" of Suspension, and 37" of tire..made me shit my pants lol.
People all of a sudden don't want to tailgate when the bumper is above their roof :icon_cool:

LOL
How does it ride?
the first turn i made off the lot i thought i was gonna turn back and park it because it was so horrible, then i realised they had it in 4hi :icon_lol:
once i switched it out of that, it was like a dream.
Obviously i didn't have high expectations going into it, seeing as it had such a big lift, and everyone i've talked to thats had a lift said it's a rough ride. But honestly it rode better then my stock 2003 Silverado, so it didn't bother me at all.
The hard thing about buying a new vehicle is keeping yourself calm and collected when your driving so you can make note of anything questionable, once you get past that excitement it's a very relaxing feeling.
Overall i was very pleased with the ride, and can't wait till winter :D (where the real proving grounds will happen)

basically i just want to know, is 15 hours that seriously out to lunch that theyre raking me over the coals here?
I'm gonna call a few transmission shops around here tomorrow. If i can get it cheaper through them, i'll just do it after.
But if 1300$ doesn't sound outrageous i'll just roll it into my overall payment on the truck and not worry about it.

09-23-2008, 01:29 AM
15 hours does seem a little long but that must be them going buy the book, But gears have to be put in right and broken in right or you will have issues with them (this is important), IF it were me I would just let them do the gears that way I'm sure they would warranty them as well, and I would roll it into the payment as well I bet it wouldn't change buy much

wow alot of people on here, i had an f-150 4x4 fx4 lifted 12" with the 5.4 gas and had to many aftermarket parts to write down but the best gears to put in is 4.56 ,with 37 you will be very happy of the kick it gives and my gears cost 950 and it was installed for 450 one of the best upgrade i made. if you want to not more write me back and i will try to put the trucks pics up
