Well after three weeks in at the mine I work at,I was looking forward to getting home.Well at km 162 of the road to the mine,my truck kind of lurched a little.Never thought much of it until it did it again. This time though it was a pronounced clunk. Then a really bad sound of something comeing apart and then it came to a sudden stop.If I let the clutch out it wants to stall.Keep in mind that im around 40 km out of camp and over 200 from town. Its -44 with the wind.In order to keep the truck running to keep heat in the truck I had to keep my foot on the clutch.Needless to say the legs get tired after awhile.I had to wait for over half an hour before someone came along to take me the rest of the way to town.So now i guess for xmas I have to buy a new tranny. Not sure what a tranny for a 2000 f550 6speed is worth. Will find out soon I guess.Merry xmas to me.

Well I checked out pricing on the tranny.I got a quote from an outfit in Edmonton at 2200.00 plus 600.00 core.shipping not included.Local price was 3800.00. 800 core no shipping. thats a big difference. Will have to check it out some more.

Well I would rather do it in camp but I think Im going to have to get him to do it.Its kind of a catch 22.If I dont get him to do it I wont get the work I need.Sucks but thats the way it goes sometimes.

OUCH... Is it the ZF 6 spd or is it an Eaton/Spicer/Fuller unit? LR

Thats a good question. That could explain the price difference.I need to get it in the shop out of this -40 weather. Thanks for that lone ranger.I just remember that it has the low 12345 gears on the stick. That could be a factor to.Need to do more digging.

Just talked to a ford dealer. He quoted me 6600.00 dollars for a new one.On the other hand he said that he had never seen one come apart to the extent where you have to buy a new one.It could be something as simple as a shifting fork dropping down. Will still have to drop the tranny. The plot thickens.

Wayne:i've had a few 550 picker trucks braking shift forks out here causing 2 gear lockup'was usually the 1-2 shift fork(most torque)had to replace fork, syncro, and gear but was cheaper than complete unit,if they have the parts in stock can be in/out in a day.:)ps.don't forget to put synth mercon not mercon v in for your climate!

Thanks Shelby.I tell you some of the pricing ive got is crazy.I had a quote form a reputible used dealer at 3000.00 for one with 130thousandk on it.Thye best price was protrac gear at 2200.00 with 600.00 core. With the price of labor up here im probably better off just getting a rebuilt and putting it in.100.00 bucks an hour for labour.

That sucks. Hope it's a cheaper fix then a new unit. Keep us posted I have the same tranny and am very interested to see the outcome of your situation.

The reason I asked is because the standard driveline (besides brakes, rearend, suspension) is basically the same between the F250s and F450s (basically F350 then for '00), but I wasn't too sure if the F550s stepped into commercial territory with Cat engines and the such (basically a highboy). By the sounds of things yours should have the 6.0L and ZF tranny, which means finding a replacement should be easier.
Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the full size trucks to know the differences in options and setups between those years. I know I'd love to own one, but I haven't looked much because I know full well I'm impulsive and I really can't afford/justify one ;) LR

Oops, my bad!! Of course, '00 was the 7.3L!! The bigger question I was concentrating on was whether or not it was a commercial model, but yours is the HD pickup model (I honestly thought they went to F450s then switched to highboy style from there up like the F650s, ect). LR

How are you coming along with the truck Wayne? I see it's still sitting outside at the Motors.
