First off my 09 is the nicest truck i have ever owned, but i have been having fuel economy issues with it as of late, at first i didn't really notice it because not long after getting my truck we went into a bit of a deep freeze, through December and into January. with temps as low as -30c so of course i was idling the truck more then usual driving in 4x4 but for the last month or so we have fairly mild weather and thats when i really started to see how much fuel my truck was using. my last tank of fuel i used 105 lters of fuel to 360km of driving with roughly 30 liter left in the tank when i filled up. which works out to 29.7/100km or 8.06 mpg.
now i am Ford tech so i have had my truck in the shop and have went through everything with out diagnostic hardware and nothing is popping out and bad. i have spoke to our tech hotline several times with basically the answer that its me the driver, so i let my service manager drive my truck, i filled it up he drove it for 90km and filled it up again, it took just over 22 liters to top off the tank which works out to 24.4/100 or 9.6 mpg.
So how is your fuel economy with your 09? do have any mods or non stock tires, i need some ammo to go after Ford with. being a long time employee of my dealer i am in a unique position of not biting the hand that feeds. now its not my dealers fault but the fight with Ford is going to have go through them, i just want them to take it seriously and stop blaming driving habits and either fix it or own up that there is something wrong with the truck.
So if the 09 drivers could give me some numbers on there fuel milage driving habits (city/highway) ect that would be great, because as of right now everything i can gather most are getting excellent milage from their 09's right off the lot.
thnx

My milage is ranging from 18 to 23 mpg..... I went 667kms on less than a tank driving 120km/hour in -30 degree weather and got 18mpg.... the best I got was 23 driving around 105km/hour. All the feedback I have been getting are above 20mpg driving reasonable.

WOW! Your doing worse miliage than a H2. Hope you can figure out the source of the problem because there is no way you should be getting 360km to a tank.

other than the new tires all stock, 5.4, 3:73's 6sp auto
but there is only a 1.3% between the stock tires and the BFG's
city driving so yes but my 04 FX4 got betting mileage with me driving it hard.

well you need to bring it to your dealers attention, my case has been forwarded to Ford engineering. if there is a problem the more info given to Ford the faster the problem can be solved.

The computer might need a reflash maybe? Lots of guys been complaining about that regarding other issues, but fuel mileage might be one of them. LR

make sure a work order is generated and log fuel consumption,it will help to back up claims.

:icon_question:would it have to do anything with the break in period - miles?
I know any new vehicle I have had (not many) the gas mileage improves after some k are on the clock.
Just putting it out there as an option for the not so pleasing mileage.

Do you have the E85 FFV engine? rated at 320hp and 390tq?
I've heard they are horrendous on fuel......and they are rated at a lot less (mpg's) than the regular 5.4 I believe!
Deano
02-21-2009, 10:19 PM
all the 5.4l engines are flex fuel capable. and you only get the 320/390 if you run e85 gas i am running pump gas 87.

OP is the truck bone stock or do you have mods? If yes, what mods? Did the service manager compare to another 09 right after?
Deano

no mods fully stock except BFG tires, we have two sales managers driving the same trucks as demos so we are using them as our base line.

wow, that is horrible mileage. I see between 15 - 17L/100km on the dash and i am between 750 - 850 km on fill ups. I haven't done the math, but it sounds close. This is only based on my first 3 tanks of fuel, some snow storm 4 wheel driving and with a sled in the back of the truck.
Truck is an 09 F150 FX4 5.4L with a 6.5ft box. I am very happy with my trucks performance and fuel economy.

+1 I hope your right and it is the infamous break in issue, my 09 is not the greatest, but I always notice that on new rigs till a few loops of the clock.
keep this alive..

That's is terrible milage. My Pete gets almost that with 85000lbs.lol .
I would say there is a problem with the truck , might be an issolated issue, trucks built during a certain time frame. When I bought my 04, I was getting 27-28/mpg right from day 1 . In the winters it would drop off to 24-25 then improve again once it warmed up. So yes let Ford know , so they can narrow it down.

well a little update, with a good trip on the high way these are the latest numbers.
479.9km traveled
103.1 liters to fill
584km new distance to empty
21.4L/100KM
10.6/MPG
i didn't take it right to empty gauge did read below 1/4 tank
still pretty poor performance in my opinion.

I'm almost in shock that that thing is that hard on gas. I just ordered an F-150 (with payload pkg) 4x2 reg cab long box for work.......should be here in a week or so. I'll have to keep on eye on the mileage!

I don't know if anyone brought it up, but the winter blend gas makes a HUGE impact of fuel economy. In the summer with my 01 3.0L Ranger I'll get around 500km's to a tank (70L tank) and in the winter it's more around 375km-400km's. The cold temps and the winter blend gas make for poor MPG's.
How's your right foot too.........a heavy one will kill fuel economy as well. LOL

I have an 09 XLT SprCrew 4x4, 5.4, 3.55 rear end, 18" wheels. My first fill up worked out to be appoximately 20.5 l/100km ( calculated manually though the trip computer did say 20l/100. The driving conditions here are horrendous- all stop and go, no speed, terrible hills and -10 degree weather. I know this is not great, but it's a damn sight better than my 06' Silverado I just returned (5.3l, 3.42 rear end) which was being used in same conditions. Given the fact that my Ford is brand new- had 15km's on it when I got it- I am not too displeased yet.
Good luck

:icon_neutral:Just filled up again over the weekend. This time the consumption was 21.8 l/100 km. Again all in town driving. The trip computer is saying 21 l/ 100 km.

well it got cold again and fair amount of snow, temps have been around -20/-30c so i have been in 4x4 and warming the truck a little more my economy read is at 39L/100 thats 6 MPG i can't tell you how disappointed i am in fuel economy with this truck, and so Ford as turned a blind eye to me, and i am dealer tech. my 04 was never this bad.
i tell you if GM doesn't fold and the mileage doesn't get better by spring/summer i will be trading it for a Z71.

2009 xlt s/crew - 5.4 3.55 6 speed - I get 14 to 15 l/100 km every tank (5000km on it now - mileage seems to be improving as I add km's) 50/50 city/highway. I get almost 1000km per 136 l tank. I get the gas mileage you describe in 4wheel. Are you 'stuck' in 4 wheel - you should be able to tell the way the truck handles.

has anyone looked at the tranny? The reason i'm asking is I had a similar situation with an 86 Cougar I ordered for my wife. We could only ever get 11mpg out of a 3.8L v6. The dealer made me go through hoops for almost a year trying to sort it out. The dealer eventually had the engine dyno'd with the result that there was nothing wrong. A few weeks later pulling on to the hiway I noticed a little hesitation going into third gear so I took it in to the dealer again where they found a defect in the tranny and ended up replacing it. My gas mileage went up to a consistant 24mpg's after that. I'm no mechanic and don't know if this makes any sense but it might be worth looking into, never know you may get lucky.

did this ever get resolved?
I picked up my '09 6wks ago or so. SuperCab 2wd 3.55LS, 5.4 6.5ft box.
I was averaging 15-16L/100kms first little bit.. I've got almost 6k on it.. and I average 18-20mpg. 11L-13L/100kms
