got in truck this morning. wipers and window washer are not working. have checked fuses (30A and 15A) and still not working. next thought is the switch on the turn signal arm. what do you think? common problem?

if the fuses are good...check with known good ones before ruling that out, then the multi function switch probably needs to be replaced

when you say multifunction switch you mean the turn signal arm assembly?

these trucks were known for the pins breaking out of the multifunction switch connectors, and shorting in the connector also, just remove the lower column cover to inspect.:)

this is not looking good so far... it's not the multifunction switch. i grabbed one from a friend at the dealer to try. piece of cake to get at, but it's not the issue.

1) not the fuses (30A or 15A)
2) not multi function switch

is there some sort of relay or controller? i assume the wipers and washer are on the same circuit so maybe there is a control relay shot?? what else?

did you check the wiring harness for the wiper motor? any loose connections or frayed wires?

i did give it a once over, but if it were only the wiper motor wiring i would still have the washer, no?

wiper motors have been known to go out....but the washer not working is throwing me off, get your buddy at ford to photocopy the wiring schematics for the system and go over them, might give you a few more things to look at

ok... for now i'll assume both the wiper motor and washer motor are ok. i know this could be a dangerous assumption, but it is unlikely both would have failed at the exact same time.

when i press on the end of the multifunction switch (washer) i can hear a relay click somewhere. same goes for when i turn on the wipers. i have not had a second pair of hands so i'm not sure if it is the same relay or not. i will check that today.

now i have to find those relays!

the saga continues...

Those relays are located in the battery junction box. What fuses have you checked (fuse # not rating)?

i've checked #106 (30A) and #33 (15A). i'll check again at lunch today just to be sure. battery junction box? the only relays i can find (other than the ones in the fuse box) are located in the engine bay to the left of the master cylinder on the fender well. i assume (but will confirm later) these are the animals i'm looking for.?

Yes that is correct.

poped the cowl cover off at lunch to see what's clicking in there. under the wiper motor there is at least one relay. i have not removed the motor yet because i don't have time til i get home.

for the heck of it i checked the power coming to the plug. there are two pairs of wires. one that is switched 12v and measures that way, and another that is always on which is measuring between 4 and 6 volts! the 6 volts is measured from the green wire to chassis ground.

maybe i'm mistaken, but that green 6 volt wire should be measuring 12v, shouldn't it?

things are looking up! i jumped 12v to the green wire and everything works. so given worst case i can make things work... now i have to figure out what broke or where the screwey connection is in that green wire!
