In a 2000 7.3l powerstroke, what engine oil should I be using in the winter. Here in the Toronto area it usually hovers between 0 - minus 10 celcius. But it can get colder. My manual says I should use 10W/30. can I use any 10/30 or does it have to be a certain type?
The reason I ask this is I changed my oil last week and put in some Castrol 10W/30, and this week my truck started knocking and ended up stalling on the road. The temp at the time was -15 celcius. The only thing that I've done differently is change the oil to the 10/30.

10w30 is recommended for year round use under normal service,as for the knocking and stalling does it idle rough,is it hard starting, what color is the exhaust plume?

10/30 seems awful light for a diesel motor....? be like running it on water...? no ?

im going to be running 15/40 rotella......5/40 rotella would be a good substitute for winter use

im also the 6.0l not a 7.3l

You should be using diesel specific oil in your 7.3.

I run 15W40 Rotella dino but may switch to 5W40 Rotella synthetic this winter as I have 320k km's on original injectors.
