Engine compatibility

Hey everyone. I recently started giving my truck an overhaul and I'm having a hard time finding an engine. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what will fit? I have a 1990 f-150 lariat XLT 4x4 V8 automatic with a 5.0L 302... Any idea how many model years newer that I could go with an engine?

You could go up to 93 without any issues. In 94 the firing order changed to the 351 order so you could also use a 94 95 motor as well but you'd have to swap some plug wires around. If you grab a 96 motor you're gonna have to change every sensor cause in 96 they switched over to OBD2

From what I've gleaned out of the '95 so far, you should be able to go back to the early 70's or even further. From a bolt pattern point of view. Inline 6, 289, 302, and 351W, 3.8 V6 may bolt up, too. Depends on what you want, carburated, fuel injected, or propane/natural gas. Oil pans and sumps are a bit of an issue. Being front, back or double.

1968 to 1996, The 302 or 5.0 were like SBC's (only better) Each year would interchange. 351W/C will fit right in where a 302 came out of. It ain't rocket science. I've been playing with Small Block Fords for years. My next project is a 62 unibody, with a 4.6 Roush with a 6 speed box. Starting in the spring. I needed something to keep me off the streets.

Oh yea....The 289 (1964 to1967) will fall in there to.

Ofcourse, I bought the truck last fall. It's semi good. And some idot put a 396 in it. I have it in storage at the moment. I will start a posting with pictures as I progress. At this time, I'm gathering parts, slowly.

Supposedly there's a compamy in the states that manufactures Ford truck body's of any year to fit whatever frame you have for $4000 complete

Of ANY year? I'd be wary of anything for that price. I'm a regular reader of Classic Trucks/Custom Classic Trucks and there's ads in them for cabs for 48-56 F-100s for around $4k.

Even that seems cheap. One of my friends owns Pro-pick, a large supplier of F100 parts in Canada. He still searches for good southern cabs. If they were that cheap, I'm sure He would let me know. But I will check with him. Because, If they make it for 1948 to 1979 F100's, George knows about it.
