What to look for when buying a used cap?

Okay, i'm interested in purchasing a cap for my truck. Last cap I owned was included with the truck so I wanna be sharp for a "pricey" purchase like this.

So far i'm aware of looking at the following;
- cracks in shell
- warping and general fit with vehicle
- cracks in windows (and window material type)
- operation of door hinge
- operation of door lock if equipped ..... if there is/are key(s) available
- operation of sliding windows if equipped
- condition of seal(s)
- condition/fit of clamps and if clamps are even included (customary???)
- operation of lighting if equipped

Did I miss anything? I want to look at one and want to be sure I don't miss anything.

PATIA!

Okay, so moving right along ..... hahaha!

Talked with the seller and, gee wow, no keys for the cap locks!

So ..... what's it take to re-key cap locks?!?!?!??! Anyone know what's involved or price?

Thanks!

EDIT - not sure if it makes any difference, but it's a Raider cap and has two locking handles on the door.

that's a pretty good list of things to check...more than what i would have thought of can't help with the re-keying...this coming from a guy who's last canopy had the keys still screwed into the roof. i never locked it for 3.5 years..

HAHAHHAHHAAAA!!!! Too funny!

I absolutely gotta have something that will lock. I mentioned this to the seller and I need to find out about this a.s.a.p.

I sent an email to Raider (because they don't mention anything about locks on their site/FAQ ) so ..... we'll see what happens.

i suppose a guy could rip the guts out of the locks and bolt in a clasp/padlock that would lock the door to the canopy side. might even be a little more secure. do both sides and a theif would have to rip both clasps out of the canopy sides.

Okay, I think i'm following you, but just to be sure - this would only work if it was a plexi rear window, right? Because drilling holes for a clasp into glass would be ..... well, not gonna happen.

Are we thinking the same thing?

But I like the idea!

i was thinking maybe along the bottom of the door. probably the strongest part of it. attach a clasp to both sides of the canopy sides near the bottom and the small clasp to the bottom of the door and pad-lock both sides.

Ah yes, okay, I see what you mean now. I'll have to see it in person to know for sure.

Thanks for the idea!!!!!!!!!!

Received an inquiry from Raider telling me that they "stock a large number of keys". Ooooooookay, well, I guess that's helpful.

I also spoke with a locksmith that has seen this situation numerous times and was told that if the lock cylinders have numbers on them that a key could be made if the correct black shape is available. He also said that I could go to a hardware store (Canadian Tire and such) and get a pair of garage door handles and they'd be the same thing, he could even re-key them to use the same (single) key.

Gonna check the cap out tomorrow night and see what happens. I'll be bringing it home if it's as good as the seller says. Yes, of course i'll post pics.

If anyone has anything they'd like to add tonight would be good please.
