Need Help in choosing a good truck

I was hoping to ask the ford gurus in this forum regarding the good and the bad, pros and cons of the F 150. I was planning on getting one soon. I found a 97 /ext cab /4x4 /5.4 /v8 /316,946k/ no rust/ auto / cloth int. power windows and door locks etc... for $4500. There is another one I was looking at 97 /4.6/ v8/ 260,000k/ slight rust at left rear bumper/auto/ leather/ power windows and door locks etc../4x4/ ext cab /one of the rims is different from the three stock F150 rims for $3500. And my last choice was a 98 250,000k/ext cab/ 4x2/ v6/ no power options/ one of the rear right wheel stud is broken/ a few scratches/ no rust/cloth int for $3000. is 316k too high for a 97 and is it over priced? What should I watch out for? Please any recommendations is greatly appreciated.

I would probably pick the 97 with the 4.6...just for the fact of the lower mileage..If you only tow occasionally, you'll probably enjoy that motor. That series of trucks had a problem of the sparkplugs occasionally blowing out of the head...but that applied to the 5.4 also. The little rust wouldn't bother me at all..neither would the different rim..could pick up a match on Kijiji. I had a 97 with the 4.6 and put on 170,000 k's when traded off. Nothing major ever broke. Could get 19-20 on the highway with the stock tires..but down to 16 when 265-75-16's were installed...and down to 14 when -40 hit.

Just avoid any 97 4.2l or an early 98 4.2l (built in January '98). They had an issue with bad gaskets that led to hydrolocked motors.

Whaddya mean I dont pay my bills?? Whydya think I'm broke!!

invest in the 4.6 its a more common engine and parts are galore if it craps out on you

i had a v6 briefly in a reg cab shortbox 2wd and it was a POS bad on fuel (no better then a 5.4L 4x4 ext cab) they had issues.

early f150's (of above years) also had issues with pitman arms and rust on the bottoms of the doors/tailgate and a cracking door (about shoulder height drivers side mostly) and the 9.75 rear ends had issues with the limeted slip clutch packs

sounds like alot of negitive but most would have been fixed under a recal or TSB to the orig owners

2000 F150 5.4L Reg cab short box 2wd
?? always looking for a new ford project !

the best thing to get on a high milage vehicle is service history,it will help decide if it was cared for, also the 97-2000 triton engines had issues with not enough threads for spark plugs causing them to blow out of the heads, and oil leaks at rh rear of engine.

a moments silence for the shelbyx,i hope her new owner enjoys as much.
