Buying a Screw 5.4 - 3.55LS or 3.73LS

I am looking at purchasing a 2010 Supercrew with the 5.4 and tow package (not Max Tow). The 9500lb rating is more than enough for me and I will usually not exceed 5000lbs towing.

I was planning on the 3.55LS for the rear axle to help with fuel mileage.

Would I be better off with the 3.73LS for towing and any idea how much this would affect gas mileage??.

Any thoughts ???

I would choose the 3.73's..negligable mileage difference IMO...I have them in my truck and can't complain about mileage..It's a truck..also down the road, if you decide on bigger tires..you'll already be geared a little lower.

Thanks for your replies.

The sales guy was telling me that the 3.73 would be much harder on gas, so I was tending to the 3.55. I couldn't see it making that much difference but I don't have any experience with the truck and couldn't really argue.

The lot is full of SCrew's with the 3.55LS so it seems very popular. (Or maybe the SCrew's are selling faster )

It is the same price whether I go 3.55LS or 3.73LS. Just have to decide before I order.

3.73's

if the lots full of trucks with the 3.55's then thats why the salesman is pushing those trucks... there ordered and on the lot so they try to push them rather then order one from the factory

Regardless of what everyone is telling you.
"You don't buy a truck for gas mileage"

Everyone likes to spare a couple bucks no matter who you are.

Personally I went with a 3.55LS for gas mileage because I wouldn't need the lower gears for towing.

I also drive highway alot.

so its up to you what you need it for.

thats my $0.02

My thoughts exactly. I have 3.73's and my parents have a SCREW with 3.55's and the mileage difference is non existent but you can feel a difference in grunt of the line.

I think I will go with the 3.73LS. Where I live there are lots of hills so the truck should actually work less with the 3.73LS setup. The only downside, I can see from the discussion, is a possiblility of a slight reduction in gas mileage but that seems to be so slight it's not really an issue.
