what should i do for a tuner

I want to get a tuner but all I keep hearing is they are all crap and not worth the money. Now maybe I should just get a tuner that can be programed and go some where to get it tunned and by who

I say if you want a tuner get custom tunes, even if you have a stock truck. I have an Edge and it is less than impressive. I run it on the lowest setting for transmission only and just adjust for my bigger tires with it. I recommend getting something like an SCT and getting something custom done up for your truck. Lots of places do it.

I run an SCT3015 on my truck. I bought a couple of tunes from 5 Star but had problems with shifting at w.o.t. and 5 Star didn't seem too interested in helping me sort it out so I went back to the canned tunes from SCT. I run the 91 perf tune and am very happy with that. I'm sure a " good " custom tune would do better but has to be from some one that knows trucks. Just my opinion.

I run an older SCT Xcal3 in my truck. I've had tunes from two different shops and both were improvements over stock.

IMHO troyerperformance.com has the best tunes but you'll have to wait months to get them as they have long wait times.

You can always get the SCT programmer and take it to a local shop to get it dyno tuned but dyno tuning is not cheap. ~$200/hr at some places.

You could also contact Misner Motorsports in Brantford, they are a site sponser.

Your in Mississauga? The next time your in Milton swing by Steeda.ca or D'sousa Performance, they are 2 of the bigger names in Ford tuning and performance. Mustang Specialteze in Georgetown does good work 2 if your ever up Trafalgar road. If your out in Scarberia you can check out Dasilva Racing.

I'll throw in with what little experience I've got on this….

I had an SCT XCALII on my Mustang due to a Steeda CAI, long tube headers , 4.10's etc etc etc, so it was a necessity…

Generally, I'm going to say canned tunes will never be as good as someone who knows what they're doing with a custom tune.

The drawback there is that you may not get the customer service you need from a customer tuner.

Makes sense right ? Something that will fit every application, or something that will fit your vehicle in particular.

Now, before the canned tune crowd gets all defensive, there's nothing wrong with canned tunes, and if you feel your getting a benefit to them, then it's money well spent, I applaud you.

But, if you're not into major mods, or screwing with the air/fuel mixture (by adding a true CAI), then the irritations of a tuner don't seem worth it to me, which is why, after I sold the Mustang, I decided it didn't really interest me anymore, perfectly happy with what the factory has to offer.

Depends what you want from your truck, what you're looking to spend, and how much potential hassle might be involved.

Good luck

do you want to add additional "go fast" goodies later?

If you want the potential of adding more go fast later you will need something that can be modified for those additional add-ons to optimize and get the full potential out of them.

SCT would be the way to go.
find yourself a good tuner with a set of rollers.
book an appt
install all your goodies
trailer it there.
let him do his thing on the rollers.
pay the man
go have fun

I'm going to throw in my 5 cents again and say buy the SCT 3015 and try it. It comes with 87-91-93 octane tunes. Throttle response alone is worth it. You can always add custom tunes later to this unit. Even with canned tunes I could never go back to stock tune on my truck. If you don't like the tuner you can always sell it as they are very popular with the diesel crowd also. No probs selling an SCT. There, I'm done!
