transmission hesitates going into reverse

I have a 1999 Ford Windstar SEL 3.8L with 120K KM's.
When I put the van in reverse it hesitates for about 3 seconds before it engages. It does this when it is cold and when warm, although it is a lot quicker to engage when it is cold.

When going into drive or the other gears it engages right away. It doesn't make any bangs or clunks when it finally goes in reverse and shifts fine while driving. I checked the fluid with the dipstick, it wasn't low and it looks clean and doesn't smell burnt.

Not sure if this is connected or maybe the cause but when shifting out of park you have to press on the brake harder than you normally would before you can shift out of park.

Thanks for any thoughts, opinions, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to fordtough.ca, not a lot of Windstars here, but there is a lot of helpful info.

120,000 km is pretty low mileage for a '99 (less than 10k a year)......has the transmission ever been serviced ??

No ideas what the problem might be, just wondering.

If it works well in every other application, I'd say you're good. Is this a new problem or has it always done this ?

Don't know if it has ever been serviced. I bought it through an estate sale. There seems that there was regular maintenance done on it but don't know for sure if what would have been done if any.

It sounds like burnt clutch packs and they tried to cover it up or "fix" it with fresh oil.

I'd swing by a couple tranny shops and see what they say. Don't stop at one tho. I will guarantee at least one will tell you that you need to rebuild it.
