Smile REar end Whine.

Yeah I know there are probly about 1000 threads about this know issue with our trucks, what i need is an opinion.

My truck a 2003 FX4 SC is in great shape, Have had it for almost 2 years, I have replaced so much the list is long, But the truck's has just over 236K on it, and i am getting really bad rear end whine, There is no dragging, but it's pretty loud, and i noticed it all but go's away when i take my foot off the gas, so to me that points to the Ring/pinion..The question is how much am i looking to replace the ring/pinion and is it worth it on such a high mileage motor?..

I maintain my truck almost to well, Wife complains about my maintence bill...

Any insight would be greatly apperciated

D

Have you priced a whole rear end from a wrecker ? If your truck is 4x4 make sure you match the rearend to the front

I helped a buddy of mine who is a Ford Tech switch out the gears in my stock Stang gears for 3.73s. There is a fair amount of work with a press and setting the preload on the pinion was tricky as it needs to be in in/lbs. Then the proper gear mesh can be achieved between the pinion and the ring gear. It took us a couple of hours. Not sure if I slowed him down or not

The pic below demonstrates how the gear contact needs to be, not to high on the ring, not too low on the ring, right in the middle is where you want it. The backlash is also critical when you throw it into reverse.

Yeah, I am starting to consider selling/trading it for something else... I just don't have the cash to be rebuilding a rear end right now, I will make some calls tomorrow and see what i can find

Just a thought. When my rear-end went in my FX4 the ring and pinion was re-useable, no damage at all. I had a whine like you are talking about and it was the bearings.
