Need Help:broken transmission/truck no move!

I have a 2008 Ford 150 60th Anniversary edition. I use it to tow a cargo trailer and on occasion a small 5x10 landscape trailer. Right now I have a small manifold leak due to a broken manifold bolt.

Tonight while leaving my jobsite I noticed that the truck had difficulty going into reverse. It would seem to lag for several seconds before dropping into gear. Then while backing up it would lose gear and the truck would not reverse, engine would rev up but no movement. Then all of of a sudden it would drop into gear again and lurch backward squeeling the tires. You could only get it to move a few feet backward.

I drove home and when I tried to back the truck up it would not go into gear at all. So I drove around the block to try to drive forward into my driveway. Upon trying this the truck started to lurch and buck while going forward. I managed to get it into the drive only for it to die completely.

Now the truck will not go into any gear and it will not roll in nuetral either. On the dash display it comes up saying TRANS FAULT and now that it has died in the yard a little wrench symbol has lit up on the dash display also. That little wrench display did not come back on when I started the truck again later on to see if it was still giving the faults. The TRANS FAULT message is still there.

A former ford mechanic checked the trans fluid-good colour, good amount and no burnt smell. He thought it may be some electronic component of the transmission system. I do have an aftermarket electronic brake controller.

Anybody have any ideas as to what it may be before I start taking to transmission guys. I can't afford to get fleeced by someone telling me it needs a rebuild if it doesn't! I work far too many hours each week (80 or more!) struggling to make ends meet for my family and I can't work without my truck! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Richard

Drop the pan, these trucks eat geartrains. Should be some jewelry in there.

The torque wouldn't go gradually. It would just let go in one shot. It's more sinister than that.

Garage
If it still used bands, I would say the 1st-reverse band servo went potty or the band itself.

Band is used in 4th & manual 2 only. Ford had never used a low reverse band in a full size truck since the fmx or c4.

Thanks for your responses! Ended up bringing it in to a good local garage. They looked at it and are putting prices together for the repair options but apparantly it looks like I need a new/rebuilt tranny!

When they put it into nuetral to winch it onto the flatbed trailer the wheels were completely locked up so it just dragged itself onto the flatbed!

So now I'm searching for rebuilt tranny's online until I can call the local wrecking yard in the morning.

What kind of tranny does a 2008 F-150 4x4 60th anniversary edition have?

locked up lockupTC.

when my 4R100 blows it won't be getting fixed, it will get retired

automatics suck, too bad you can't buy a standard in a Ford anymore
