Axle Seal

Hey. I just noticed that the inside of my passenger rear rim is wet, and upon further inspection it looks like the axle seal is leaking. Im looking at changing it myself as I am going to be installing a brake kit as well and half the parts will already be off. The only question i have about the job is how to pull the axle out. I havent really gotten inside one of these rear diffs before so im just curious how hard it is to take the retaining clip out so you can pull the axle out. I went by ford but it doesnt really show hows its held in there, just that there is a clip in the diff. Anyone that can give me some info on how hard it is?

Do you have a Hayne's or a Chilton's manual. I can check mine but not sure what year your truck is.

Its an 04 with the 9.75" diff. Ive talked to a few people and it should be pretty easy. Pull all the hardware off, pull the diff cover, push in the axle to expose the c-clip, remove it and pull the axle.

Ok then my manual will not help then. If it did I was going to scan the pages and post em.

Good luck with the fix. Getting mine rebuilt this Aug.

Well got it all done. Was actually pretty simple to do, took about an hour or 2 and most of it went really smooth.

Ya the most difficult parts were just finding the right size socket to take the pin out of the diff, and getting the rotor off of the axle. But after a bunch of brake clean and some scraping and everything its all clean and good to go again.

Next weekend, all new rotors and pads.

To take out the old seal we just kept tapping it with a screwdriver and hammer till it was kinda bent out of shape and came out really easy. If you had a seal driver it would probably make it easier to put in, but all we did was take a hammer and a 6" piece of flat iron and slowly tapped it and moved the iron around till it was seated all the way.
