Tranny Trouble

Was driving on the highway yesterday and noticed smoke coming from the truck in the rearview mirror. Pulled over right away and noticed a lot of oil coming from the tranny, mostly from the bellhousing. Had it towed to a Transmission shop to have a look see this week, as I know the guy who owns the shop. We both think that it's coming from the front seal, but won't know till we pull it out and open it up.

Truck only has 102K on it. Anyone else have any problems with their transmissions. Truck is a 2005 F-150 Screw with a 5.4

First of all, welcome to the site. Second, if you've noticed oil that's probably a good thing in that it probably might only be a seal, but still a cost.
Good luck with the fix, keep us posted.

No, there are no mods on the truck. Truck has been good up till now. Was just getting ready to take her on a road trip. It was the smoke in the rear mirror that caught my eye. Once pulled over, the tranny oil was pouring out just like pouring a drink. I'm hoping that it's just the seal and nothing else was damaged inside.

I'll find out more in the next day or two......

welcome to the site, when you pull out the torque conv. check for scoring on the seal/front pump bushing surface as i have had a few with this problem, and also make sure the vent isn't plugged, also when installing new seal use some anarobic sealant on the outside surface that meets the front pump(seals have a habit of popping out)best of luck hope to hear the outcome.

a moments silence for the shelbyx,i hope her new owner enjoys as much.

Well, I stopped by my buddy's shop tonight after work. He owns a local Tranny shop here in town. Looks like my hunch was right and it was the front seal that had popped out. He had just finished taking the tranny appart when I got there so we could take a look and make sure everything else was in good shape. The front brass bushing was worn in a couple spots, so that's getting changed. There is another smaller gear(can't remember the name) but it goes down inside the planetary gear, it too is showing some wear and is getting changed. The overdrive band has a few burnt marks on it and that's getting changed as well. And since I've got the tranny opened up, I'm getting a shift kit put in since I've got the opportunity.

Should pick up the truck tomorrow after work, if not, Wednesday for sure.

Cheers,

Well, here is the break down of the repair bill. Some parts were changed due to showing some wear and it was decided to change it out now while the transmission was open.

1. Changed the sun shell gear and sun shell. Replaced the sun shell with a heavy duty one which was tig welded not rivited like the factory one.

2. Changed an assortment of seals, bushings, o-rings and gaskets as per usual overhaul.

3. The EPC solenoid was changed out as he found some dirt in it.

4. The Overdrive band was changed out due to some burn marks on it.

5. I also had a Superior shift kit installed while tranny was apart to help with shifts.

6. The Direct clutch discs were changed out also.

All in all, I'm very please with how the tranny works now, shifts are a lot more crisp and not lagged behind. Total cost of the rebuild, including parts and labour was $1,835.74 CDN. I'm always very happy with the work Tom does at his shop, he's done work for me on my mustang and other vehicles before. If anyone is ever looking for a transmission shop in this area, go see Tom at Kingston Transmission, I highly recommend it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he does custom work. Gave me a 1 year warranty on my rebuild. That's what he normally gives. Looking to do some custom work on something. He's got a great shop, very good to deal with and has lots of knowledge.

Cheers,

If you want to talk with him, send me a PM and I can give you my name.
