4X4 High Noise

Hey everyone. Just bought an 08 F350 6.4l couple months back. Had no use for four wheel until last night. Quick Question. Is it normal to hear a whirring noise when 4 high is engaged? On my previous truck 07'F150 Lariat I did'nt hear anything of the sort. I have it booked in at the dealership to have a listen/look. Just curious if anyone else has/had the same noise?

Thanks All,
Trev.

How fast were you diving when you hered the noise?

Max speed was around 90 kmh, Started hearing it at around 30kmh. Pitch of whirring would grow louder the quicker you went and get quieter the slower you became.

i had a similar prob yesterday. when switched to 4hi i would hear a ratcheting sound that would increase the faster i went. i think it's the hub. does the noise go away when back to 2wheel? Any snow/mud packed in there and not allowing the axle to engage/disengage completely? Even when i turned mine back to 2wheel the noise was still there. it's gone now. I drove thru 5" of snow going to work and used 4by a few times on the way. i then put my truck in a heated shop overnight and i think some water froze in it the next morning and wasn't allowing my hub to diengage. Could this be your prob?

When it disengaged the noise would go away. Pretty sure there was no debris of anything. Could be totally wrong though. I'll try again tonight and see what happens. Still, I'll bring it to the shop. Kind of annoying.

Truck's back from the dealership. They said the "noise" is normal when engaged in 4hi. I'll take their word for it until my transfercase explodes. Glad to have it back.

Its normal to hear a "whirring" noise when the t-case is engaged, its the whine from the chain drive and the planetary gears.. You should hear how noisy that can be under full load at high speeds in the snow with no carpets in the truck!!! I'm running straight piped 2¼" side exit exhaust on my truck now and its very audible over that!

Its hard to say about ratcheting and clunking noises, but the only time I've run into those is when u-joints or CV joints bite the dust. LR
