towing

i have a 1990 f250 with a 5 speed. if i am towing should i keep it in 4th or is OD o.k. I know with a auto tranny never put it in OD when towing. just wondering?

it shouldn't hurt anything as it's all gear to gear but will have less pulling power as it's a .75:1 ratio gear.

I have an auto and I use OD when towing. I just gear down (turn OD off) when passing or at the bottom of a hill. I would do the same with a manual tranny otherwise you burn a bunch of extra fuel for nothing. Using synthetic fluid in the trans helps too.

4th gear, Ford in that generation recommended against towing in 5th. It had something to do with lubrication in the transmission and potential for overheating the engine.

Just for the record for anyone with an auto reading this. There is no issue with a 99+ SD towing in OD. Now if it's a 90's GM auto (700r4 I think); that's a different story.
