With that much smoke and heat occurring, you would think that you would hear something as well, as far as wheel bearings go.
Or a bearing race spinning within the hub assembly.
Looks to me that things need to be taken apart and checked out for signs of wear and heat damage.

Press on regardless!

Decided to give it one more try, ordered new calipers, pads, rotors and a flex line for the left rear. If it still does the same thing after all this then I wash my hands of this truck. It'll go up on autotrader/kijiji and it'll be someone else's headache.

get that bearing checked while they have it all apart - better to find it then rather than later

mine also only seems to do it on left turns too

last fall I had to replace the left rear axle seal - it leaked axle lube all over the back of the tire so I'm thinking maybe a bad bearing was the reason the seal gave up

I'm not getting huge amounts of heat though - but I don't drive more than a few miles at a time and almost no highway driveing 'cept one ramp over to the next or the one after

Are the c-clips intact in the diff?

The 2nd time it was in I had them remove the cover to change out the gear oil and told them to check everything inside to make sure there was no issue with the diff. I was told it was all good.

I planned on having them check the bearing while the right rear wheel is off.

Finally this is fixed. Total cost over 4 trips to the shop just over $1000.

Replaced both calipers, new pads, new rotors, new flex lines both sides and did a test run on the hwy. Checked the wheel temp with a laser temp gauge and they are within 1 degree of each other so issue is resolved.

Wheel bearings are in great shape so no need to change them yet.
