VHT Niteshades Third Brake Light Mod

Starting this thread a little early, but what the hell.

First up, props to hooduu for posting up the pic of his Recon LED smoked third brake light mod.

I saw it and was intrigued by the blacked out look, so credit where it's due.

Always thought the OEM third brake light stood out like a sore thumb, especially on a Tuxedo Black truck.

The Recon unit meets my requirement in the subtle category. lol

Took a quick look on E-bay, and prices were pretty much the same as from the dealer, so I ordered mine directly from the Recon website yesterday.

Did some research on a Raptor forum, and one thing I've found out (since putting in my order) is that the regular F150 third brake light is equipped with three wires, whereas the Raptor third brake light has seven wires.

It would also appear the wiring is not as straight forward as it seems:

RECON white to OEM black (cargo socket)
RECON red to OEM red (center plug)
RECON black to OEM white ( centre plug)

Apparently the other four wires are not necessary. Add in the fact you can't use the OEM plug....some splicing required.

A lot of the posts on the Raptor forum complained that the quality of light from the unit was not earth shattering, but I will reserve judgement until I see for myself.

There's always the option of spraying the factory unit with some sort of tint spray, I've seen it done for Mustang tail lights, so that's Option B if I'm not happy.

Time will tell, but for starters, here's a quick "before" pic ( from Feb/2011) to keep things moving......

Updates as they happen.

I have sprayed both my tail lights and third brake light with night shades spray tint. It's a good product but it gets dark fast. Mine are quite dark but you can still see the lights during the day

the only things holding you back are fear and common sense

Yup, VHT Nightshades is a product I've seen mentioned more than once. Might have to scoop up a can at Cambodian Tire, looks like they sell it.

Almost think I like that option better...no cut and splice, everything stays OEM.

Might have pulled the trigger on the RECON a little too soon.

Damn you hooduu, DAMN YOU TO HELL. lol

I'll keep it in mind Grant, thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it.

I'm thinking I like keeping everything in one piece, no cut and splice.

Wish I had done my homework on this one, normally I don't like to stray too far from the FRPP stuff.

Did not realize the Raptor had the extra wiring, which bothers me a little.

Time will tell on this one, thanks to Blair and Tristan for the feedback on the VHT Nightshades.

Local CTC did not have it in stock, (although they did have VHT products), so next bet is to try NAPA and the like.

What's the issue with the third light? Just not bright enough?

I need a small led project.. Let me know. Ive been doing a lot of research on superflux super bright LEDs.. Maybe an upgrade to the lighting....

Two separate issues here Travis.......the wiring and the LED's themselves.

I honestly don't have an issue with the LED's until I actually see them to make that call, but some of the guys that had them on one of the Raptor forums squawked that they weren't bright enough for their liking.

I'm more concerned with the wiring aspect of it....probably no big deal, but I've got no patience for f#$%ing around with shit to make it fit right the first time.

This sort of bullshit is the whole reason I'll buy anything branded by Ford or Ford Racing Performance Products for my trucks, and not so much the aftermarket stuff.

No fault on anyone who does, some stuff out there is great, but my patience level isn't. lol

Ohh the joys of modding!

Come and see me. I'll pull the factory plug off. Put on adapter plug for the recon and put another adapter on the factory oem plug so if you were ever to go back to factory it will just plug back in.
