I have a friend in Bracebridge, with an 03, 5.4, 5 speed, 4X4. I had a 97 with a 4.6, 5 speed. I've heard of people mounting Mustang 6 speeds to 5.4's. I not sure if you need an adapter plate. Try checking with Performance Improvements out that way. they should have an answer.

ah , great thanks much - a 6 speed is probably way out of my price range but it's good to know I might be able to scrounge somthing up at a few wreaker's

I know I'm going to have to figure the electrical differences between auto and manual transmission - there I'd be clueless for now

I'll willingly admit I'm a newbie to mod motors and 98 &^ trucks - though I did learn all about the spark plug blow out issue this past fall
- another reason I'm broke just now

There is a guy on f150 online that swapped an m5od into a 97-03 truck with a 5.4. I believe his user name is JMC. FYI there is a reason ford never offered the manual with the 5.4. I'm pretty sure that JMC is on his 5th or 6th tranny. The m5od can't handle the torque

K , that's a big step in the education thanks
I was wondering to myself just this afternoon about exactly that - if the trans would take any power or if it made the truck into a putz mobile

that probably explains the first best reason for the 6 speed swap - I'd figure maybe that one's ment to stand up to some abuse if installed in a performance platform

Hmm. I may have lied a little bit. JMC had a 4.6 with a 5 speed and swapped in a 5.4, but kept the 5 spd. Still some good info there though

that's ok , just takeing a peek and thinking the blower on his truck might be the trany killer

I have no real intension of makeing more than 300-350 hp so maybe I'd be ok - I don't beat up my vehicles like I did when I was younger either so that may help too

an improvement in gas mileage would be welcome tough

I'm not claiming it's exact but the mileage read out on my edge tuner gives me some guideline of how I'm doing
after I put the cold air kit in I went for a ride from scarborough to newcastle doing 45-55 mph
I got home & the average said 25. somthing (2 mpg improvement) - if I can get to 28-29 I'll be on par with the 86 dodge turbo z I used to drive & I'd feal like I'd accomplished somthing considering the 4 extra cylinders that need feeding
