97 high idle stalls

bro in law bought a 97 reg cab short box its auto with the 4.2L

i havent had the chance to look at it yet but it apparently high idles at a stop sign/light and sometime the exact oposite it will stall out

like i said i havent had a chance to look at it yet or listen to it run, anyone have any ideas ? sort of seems to me like a vacume problem.....

well pulled the truck into the shop couldnt get it to high idle at all but when in gear it almost stalls out and surges from stall point to idle rpm's

pulled the IAC off had a look it seems to be working proper cleaned and lubed up put back on didnt make a difference found a small vacum leak on the passenger side in a main conection fixed truck still does the same thing, chck engine light was on also removed battery terminals cleaned and to reset the computer fired back up no change check engine light was out for about 2-5min of running then came back on.... hope to get a scan tool from a buddy and plug it in to get some codes....

it idles fine in park and neutral does its stall thing when in gear when reved up or driving there doesnt seem to be an issue

anymore idea's ?

check this site out v6f150.com it is devoted to those engines

P1537 - Intake manifold runner control stuck open (bank 1) - While the engine is running, the PCM detected the IMRC bank 1 to be out of its designated spec. Check to see if the valve is stuck open.

P1538 - Intake manifold runner control stuck open (bank 2) - While the engine is running, the PCM detected the IMRC bank 2 to be out of its designated spec. Check to see if the valve is stuck open.

check the imrc valve vacc lines at rear of lower intake(they like to melt)also see if you can manuelly move the imrc lever(be careful they are under spring pressure)to see if plates are seized.

Yeah the PCV elbow back there can collapse. PITA to get to though. When I had the top of the motor off a few years ago I noticed mine looked like an hourglass shape restricting air flow.

thanks joined the site but "still" waiting on being alowed to post... and not many issues that i can find there with IMRC

re looked at vacume lines slight leak pulled apart and re-sealed all i had was grease it worked but truck still ran like ass (after running the leak re-apeared like an over pressure leak) and CEL still came back so we pulled the intake off, its been off before (note he just bought the truck a month ago) get the intake off and the IMRC's seem to work properly for what we can tell they move freely and when moved create vacume in the lines that run to the intake

side note the intake and runners leading by the IMRC are carboned up pretty good but the back runner closest to the IMRC is spotless....

not sure where to go now besides a new gasket a clean up of everything and re-assemble... hate to put it back together and still have the bad idle problem

also the IAC control on top of the intake is makeing a loud buzzing noise when ingaged it seem to be working but not well

still no luck at the v6f150 site going to give up.....(still waiting for an aproval to post)

put everthing back together this afternoon the IMRC's both work and hold there vacume found that the intake gasket was new and could have been leaking from bolts not so tight its a felpro gasket heard bad things with them in the 4.2L's but ive had good luck with them in the past in my 2.9L's that ive had apart and a 5.0L
reused the gasket and blue siliconed it the idle control valve will be replaced it wasnt throwing a code but it sounded sick when actuating (or not) and same problem idle with engine stumbling in gear although it wasnt as bad and when messing around with the IAC it would go away or comeback even at one point unplugging the IAC and the engine ran like a dream... hope its fixed need to get other projects in the shop
