2001 F150 Spare Tire Removal

Okay, we have a 2001 F150 as our shop truck at work (I think it's a 2001) and we can't get the spare tire loose. The mechanism uses a special key, almost like a security lug nut for your wheels. We have the key, but can't get a good enough fit to turn the crank.

Any tips/alternate methods of dropping the tire?

As Jim said use a torch and cut the knob off the end of the cable, but watch that the tire don't fall on you.

My '99 has a big long bar tucked in front of the rad just as you open the hood. I'm pretty sure the '01 has the same set up.The "key" should be on the end of the bar shaped like a big long crank.(I had a flat 3 years ago, that was a fun day) If it's not too badly corroded your tire should drop, other wise like every one says cut the cable .Ogre

i took the key part out becasue any bit of dirt will make it difficult to get up. you can only get it off thou once the tire is down. it just pops off when you remove the black guide tube.

Really? Its the Internet take it easy.

i have removed the guide tube and the lock bit with tire in,just reach under and turn tube 1/4 turn and pull out,use a long screwdriver to pop out lock bit, then you can use tool to drop spare.(you may want to purchase a 6pack first as this is a pita job)

a moments silence for the shelbyx,i hope her new owner enjoys as much.

Thanks guys, from the sounds of it it's going to be at least a 12 pack project!

2 Minutes with a torch and your good to go, if your not gonna put it back under the truck than I'd torch it out. Most likely it won't release if it hasn't been used before be all rusted and full of salt & sand.
