Can't shift out of Drive

Got in the truck this morning to run to the store. Backed up out of my parking spot here at the house and drove to the store. All was normal till I got to the store. I could not get the shifter to go back up, it could go down to 3,2,and 1 but not past drive. After two or three tries, I was able to get to neutral but no further. I was able to push it backwards out of the parking spot.

We did have some snow overnight and there is slush on the road but in two winters of driving this truck and 27 years of driving, I have never had this happen before. It isn't even cold now, it is starting to melt. Is there ice somewhere or do i need to make an appointment at the stealer?

Is it the shifter handle that won't go any farther or is it the tranny that won't go into the gears but the handle will?

do you hear a click under the dash when you press the brakes?

kinda sounds like the brake shift interlock.

do your brake lights work?

Have never had this happen on my truck, but used to happen on my car all the time..try popping the little square panel right beside the shifter (passenger side) might need a little flat head ( I used to use the arm from my sunglasses) stick it down in there and should be a shift lock release..not 100% on this, but worth a try. Something to do with a solenoid between the brake pedal and shifter.Hope this helps!!

It is the handle that won't move. Tranny shifts normally in drive and no weird feelings or smells.

Should only need the brake interlock to shift out of park iirc

Of course this means that the truck is in the ACC position and the keys cannot come out of the ignition and the doors cannot lock. Good thing I live in a rural area.

Well the temp around here warmed up significantly this afternoon. I goes into park now but still not easy...only got to reverse a few times from drive then finally got to park. Might make a dealer appointment but definately going to rethink how and where I park until I get it looked at.

Ric,don't know if your truck has column shift or consol but I had a problem with a 08 F250 column shift where it would go into neutral from park instead of reverse. Didn't do it when I tried to show the dealer. Wound up taking out tranny and converter. Week after that I took it in for same problem and they had to replace shifter and some electronics connected to shifter in column. Don't wait too long.

Such is life. Just passing through.
