Gas Cap Cover

The gas cap cover won't close after a standard fill up.
Appears to be the cheap plastic hinge or pin is gone.

Apparently a $500 repair as they have to take off the door and paint a new one to match the truck.

The American sites indicate this happens to others.....due to an inferior component.
Is this their meaning of "Built Ford Tough"? Yikes!

Has anyone here had this issue and how was it resolved?

No help for you, but welcome to fordtough.ca, great first post Pam, sorry to hear you're having troubles with your fuel door.

Did you join to find some help, or just to throw out "cheap plastic hinge", "$500 repair", "inferior component" and a sarcastic "Built Ford Tough? Yikes! "

Not trying to be an asshole, but join an enthusiast forum and start throwing out terms like that makes you come across like a troll.

What year is your truck ? Are you the first owner ? What sort of abuse has been heaped on the fuel door ? Who quoted the $500 repair ? Body shop ? Ford dealer? Local mechanic ? Is that new parts, paint, labour and taxes all in ?

More info is always better to get a better answer.

In answer to your original question, I've owned six F150's and never had any problems like you've described.

My '11 F150 fuel door went limp just before I traded. The dealer replaced the hinge mechanism under warranty. Couldn't tell you the price.

It opened funny one time I went to fill up and they wouldn't stay closed. The spring let go I assume.

From then on I try and make sure the door doesn't slam shut. Not sure if that would help or lengthen the life or if it was just a bound to happen fluke. Either way it makes me feel better if I make a conscious effort to not left it slam shut.
