2010 Towing Mileage Question

I just got back from a trip where I towed a 1400kg trailer with my 2010 F150 5.4 Max Tow Pkg and was surprised at the way the truck handled.First of all the mileage was pretty dismal,on average about 29L/100km.Second the truck would not hold speed in top gear causing the tranny to kick down a gear and leading to higher rpm and poor mileage. My question is;is this normal? With such a small load I expected the truck to drop into od and stay there but it would slow down and kick down over an over again. The strange thing was that towards the end of the trip the truck held od and maintained a cruising speed of about 115kph. Has anyone else experienced this? What are you guys getting for towing mileage? My empty mileage is great, just sucks when towing.

well when towing you're not supposed to use OD. It's not good for the tranny

Thats why there is the " tow/hual " switch it's for when you tow a trailer keeps the truck from shifting so much. I use " tow/hual " for fast take offs from stop lights ( lol ) and with my after market exhaust it growls more.

That was in Tow/haul Mode. Also there is no way to lockout od unless you keep it in 3rd gear.

JOURN how fast are you travelling when pulling the 8500lb trailer?I'm curious because my trailer weighs the same,I haven't pulled it on a long trip yet because the truck is brand new.
