8.8 interchangeable parts ?

First off, I've got a 95 F150 Reg. Cab Longbox w/ auto and 2wd. Bought it with a 3:08 open diff then put 32/1150 tires on. This combo sucks for gas mileage around town which is most of my driving.
I've torn down a couple of other trucks (95 and 96) to get a few parts I wanted (keep what I want, sell or scrap the rest).
So now I have 2 spare diff's, 1 is a higher mileage 3:55 LSD (95), the other is a real low mileage 3:55 open (96).
The LSD setup is going to need new side and spider gears as well as clutch packs, which is not too bad ,but I'm trying to figure the practicality of putting the LSD carrier into the open (low mileage) housing using the low mileage gears and shafts and the LSD carrier.
Anybody know what does and doesn't interchange between the 2 ?

if you are mostly in town, why don't you just grab up a 1st gen explorer rear, most were limited slip, most had 3.73 gears, all were 31 spline same as the Fseries. you already have your axle shafts and housing. explorers were not very heavy compared to a fullsize pu so posi are still usually intact.

3.55s are ok but if you do mostly city..................................

cheers James

That's about what I thought. Someone was saying the other day that the spiders and side gears from the open diff will work in the posi carrier, but I'm a little doubtful of that - one site I checked showed different part #'s.
Any thoughts there ?
The gears aren't that much anyway, could order them the same time as the clutch packs, but if the good ones I've got did fit ... well why throw away money ?

That's a good point. But being as I already have 3:55's ... I can change the ratio some for very little money. My labour comes cheap when I'm doing something for my own truck.
I don't hate it with 3:08's just think 3:55 would be a little better. If that doesn't do it for me I'd probably go right to the 4's.
And it's not like a rebuilt low mile 3:55 LSD wouldn't be worth something if I didn't want it.
That's kinda the way I'm thinking anyway.
