Old 400 CID engines

Good Morning. I would like to know where to fine info on 400 CID engines used in the late '70s. My '76 has the label 351/400 M but my neighbor's '79 is labelled 400 EGR. The M series engines were notorious for bad cranks. Did Ford improve them and change the labelling on the later engines? Thx in advance.

Google is your friend. There is lots of info out there. Their cranks were no weaker than anything else out there. They all need oil. There were different emission systems used on them so different labels. I had a 78 Bronco with 400 with 351C 4v pistons, Edlebrock Peformer intake, Crane RV cam, Hooker headers. Had to put bushings in con rods to make up for different pin size but when done it would out pull most 460 engines. 9mpg empty or pulling 10,000 lb trailer. Mega torque at low rpm from the 400 if set up right.

Such is life. Just passing through.

cranks were not the problem. poor quality bearing right out of the gate.
not many 400s with original bearings in them any more. 400 is an under rated engine that can produce lots of torque. and with a 4 barrel aftermarket intake can keep up with a stock 460, with a little less weight.

not sure on the egr designation but I'm guessing that your neighbors engine is either in a car or an F100,

yours is probably from an F150-F350. lighter vehicle had stricter emmisisons.

does yours have an egr on it?

I know my 76 460 truck motor was no air pump , no egr

my 76 460 ltd station wagon motor was an air pump / egr motor though

so what it originally went into makes a bit of a difference

my 79 302 half ton was a non catalitic exhaust but my buddy's 80 was

though an 81 one ton was still non catalitic
