anyone gotten into a 4.6 swap?

i just got a 04 f150 4.6 that ive already torn down and planning my build list now. i dont want to put it in my 07 ranger, but maybe in a similar 2wd one. im sure ford made a bit more room in the engine bay with the intoduction of the sohc 4.0. im sure a 4.6 will fit, ive heard the valve cover gets close to the brake booster and i can see why.. this thing is huge. im definatly getting rid of the truck intake, its massive.

The 4.6 should fit cause I've seen the 5.8 ( 351 ) in a ranger, just use some lowering engine mounts gets the motor down in the truck more.

the 351 is actually smaller than a 4.6, the heads on this thing are massive. i knew it was a big engine, but i didnt realize just how big until i saw it sitting on my crane with the transmission on the back, id post pictures but i dont know how to XD

I know the 5.0 swap is popular so the 4.6 should be ok.

Wiring is gonna be the issue. You're gonna need the ECU, and all under hood wiring

The 4.6L is a wide deck engine, MUCH wider than the 5.0L and 5.8Ls actually. Hydroboost setup might be a consideration if you run into clearance issues there, but for the rest its just going to take lots of shoehorning. I'd personally be looking into Mustang accessories (intake, exhaust, ect) because they're bound to be much more compact than the truck stuff. I figure that if they can stuff one into a Sportrac or a Mustang, it should fit with a bit of luck into a Ranger. LR

What year was the motor? the later motors had PATS and you will need the matching gauges and ignition to start the engine or so I'm told

It's from an 04 f150, and I got everything from the fan to the driveshaft including computer and wiring. I'm planning on ditching the intake, its massive I'm looking into various options, but more focused on building it first. Im thinking I may need to switch computers because I'm getting rid of the drive by wire, and depending how I build this, I think I need to go with a stand alone engine management system, as im upping compression and probably doing cams.. XD

I think if you go with the stand alone engine management your going to save your self a whole lot of headaches with wiring and probably be able to make more power if your cams and such
