Refinishing Alloy Rims

Now that I got my windows tinted, I need to finally get around to refinishing my rims. The clear coat started peeling on all 4 rims, but mostly on my front rims.

I wanted to get them powder coated, but here in Sudbury it's hard to find powder coaters and they are a little expensive.

So I watched a few Youtube videos and most people just use paint stripper, then prime and paint.

Anyone ever refinish rims?

Is it worth the time or will it peel within a few months?

I was thinking either flat black, or charcoal?

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

Meh, I always thought these days it's cheaper to buy what you want new than to screw around with re-finishing/powdercoating.

Seems to be a lot of buzz about Plastidip, but never used it myself.

I picked up a set like that to use as my winter rims. I paid great price because they were in bad shape... I cleaned them up using a wire brush on my drill and then a bit of sanding and then painted with Duplicolor Graphite wheel paint and clear.

I'm really happy with the results and how they look on the truck. I get quite a few comments on them which is cool for what started out as rims in really bad shape.

I'm not a fan of black rims but if you are plastidip would give a nice mat black finish. I did my bumpers and grill with Plastidip and it's very easy to work with and minimal / no prep time and a plus is non permanent so if you don't like it peel it off.

Those rims came out great. Did you paint the back-side of them as well? How is that Duplicolour wheel paint holding up?

If Princess Auto were a real girl, I'd ask her to marry me.

After posting this, I googled how to refinish rims and plastidip keeps coming up. There's tons of Youtube videos on it. Plastidip sounds intriguing and the fact that you can peel it off if you don't like it is a bonus.

Do you even have to strip the clear coat off??? Or maybe just sand the bad spots on the rim and go to town?
