LSD Rear end issues

I run a 04 XL 3L ranger with the 4.10 Ford LSD in the rear. The truck has 75,000KM (so ~50k miles).

Yesterday I got stuck in a bit of deep snow... spun the tires a bit trying to get out, but nothing over 3500rpm and for no longer then 20-30 seconds at a time. Then all of a sudden while one tire was spining freely on ice the other tire started jerking and making a loud *clicking* sound. No everytime the LSD should be engaging both tires one or the other just makes this horrible notchy *clicking* sound and does essentially nothing.

Diff blown? Is that possible after only 75,000KM!? I never beat on this truck ever.. its never been stuck in anything other then snow on city streets. Can a little deep snow possibly blow the diff up? Is this a common issue with ranger LSD's?

Any possible feedback would be great here guys I'm scratching my head pretty hard over this one!

The truck has also ALWAYS been dealer serviced where I bought it.

how dos your u joint look like? wen you loose a cap it make a funny noise like pop corn

if not it might be you lsd clutshs that are [email protected]# or just need some ajusting

if it was your diff it would be very bad nois and you wont go very far

i you can jack up your rear end and put it in drive you might know or isolat the sond and find your problom

Hurricane, first let me welcome to

Now, I would check the U joints and the yolks on the truck first next I think the diff cover needs to come off to take a better look at what is going on in there my first thoughts are the clucth packs worn or a lack of sufficient lubrication or you have a broken ring or pinion gear but like I said the diff cover has to come off to get a better idea of whats happening in there I also see your in Oakville if you want the name of a good shop to bring it to PM me I know a few in the area that do good work

Well first I am going to attempt to get Ford to fix the LSD for me for free. A couple months ago, before the truck went out of warranty I took it in to have them check the LSD as I felt it wasn't engaging when it should. They said it was perfectly fine and not to worry about it. Now its dead so hopefully I can swing something with the service manager.

If that doesn't work I'll be looking at upgrading to a torsen LSD as I will not be pleased with an LSD that only lasts 75k.

These shops you speak of SKRWZ can they get me an aftermarket LSD and install it?

When you took it in last time did you get paperwork that said it was fine, or did they document that it was OK and their was no problem? because I bet you'll get a free repair then., if you had to flip the bill and wanted an upgrade you could always order a Eaton or a auburn unit and take it to a local guy and have him put it in the labor would most likely be about 450 or so
