im talking about FORD RANGER SINCE 1983
NOT f-150 rangers, im talking about real RBV's: RANGER, BRONCO II, MAZDA B-SERIES, EXPLORER

So far I've owned an 87, 90, and now a 93.. Have several friends who own new Rangers and have driven/wheeled them as well.

So far my 93 has been my favorite; no ABS or OBD crap, locking hubs and manual t-case, like the dash and interior, like the lines and contours of the exterior, and I love the fact that its still a good solid truck (everything's tucked up under it, steel d-shafts vs new aluminum ones, steel bumpers). Oh, and fairly stout driveline right out of the box complete with 31s. Also, uses serpentine belts and 3G alternators so its easy to swap in a 130A alternator (cost me under $200 for a '98 Explorer alternator and new belt, and had a 4ga charging wire with 150A fuse already here. With dual Optima redtops it has no issues handling driving lites and the winch). Still the good ol' EEC-IV ignition and same simple layout for repairs like the 1st gen trucks (at least in my '93 XL).

I didn't mind my 90 but I found it to be too much of a compromise of old and new, and unfortunately not enough of the good of both IMO.

My 87 I loved to death. Good solid truck, always liked the interior and dash, I always loved the exterior lines of the 1st gen trucks (even if the wheel wells never fit any real tires properly), and they were just a good truck. Bad being the lack of a 4.0L and better axles/brakes, and the wiring's better in the newer Rangers.

My comments on the new ones: from everything I've heard Ford did a good thing by making the SOHC 4.0L. Since they're new(er) they will be in better shape, but a lot more electronics and goofy little add-ons, but I REALLY wish that my Ranger has the 4 door setup like the new Rangers!!! Since the stock seats don't really fold forward properly its a whore getting anything out of the back. Also, I don't care for the more exposed driveline, aluminum rear d-shaft, and plastic bumper. But at least they got proper tow points from the factory though.

That being said, I'm still half tempted to find a mint base model '87 extended cab 4wd and swap all the running gear from my '93 into it and make a damn good truck from it. '87 Ranger with '93 4.0L, TK-5 tranny with 4.0L clutch and starter swapped in, Atlas-II 3.8 t-case, D30 with cro-mo shafts/297x u-joints/4.56 gears/e-locker, 1 pc d-shafts, newer 'ploder 8.8 disc rearend with c-clip eliminator kit/4.56 gears/electrac locker, 4" lift and cut fenders to fit 34" LTBs... Even tinkered with throwing Toy axles under one! Small but capable. LR
