01 4.0 replacement?

hi, i have an 01 ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 auto and the timing chains? and the 1st rocker (at least) is screwed. i spun the tires on ice and guess i over revved it a bit and heard alot of rattling coming from the valve cover. it split the cover at the 1st rocker and i took it to an older mechanic who took it apart quickly to check it out and he said it would be better to just replace the engine by the time i paid for the chains and whatever is needed. i was wondering if anyone knew what other engine years bolt right in? what other models i could get the engine from? i was thinking on letting it sit til the fall but would like to play around in the summer. any help would be cool, thanks alot.

if you got the time why not rebuild the one thats in there ? you never know what you get from the wreckers 100% most have a 30day return but doesnt count for labouror man hrs....

i would think that any SOHC 4.0 would bolt right up so if thats true, plz someone correct me if i'm wrong, any v6 from the newest body style mustang, from the 01+ rangers, and i think 98+ explorers. I'm not 100% sure on this so hopefully someone else will give a say if its correct or not.

cool, thanks. i was debating on just pulling it and taking it apart. i have all summer and i didnt hear anything from the block and it has 170 kms and the etest guy said that it tested lower than most newer cars hes seen, so i really was thinking on taking it apart and trying to fix it. be nice to have a spare lol. i was worried about little differences and that something might be oddball ranger only on it. ive been quoted like 900ish but my buddy said if i wait til fall he might get one for 4-500 if theyre ever overstocked during the summer. thanks, jay
