battery issue

Well i have an issue with my battery seems once in a while it starts then it doesnt the next morning or even after 1 or 2hrs after turning off, also light on dash( battery light) flashes. so went and put in new battery old one reading only 12.6.battery light still flashes even after new battery installed, no problems starting could it be problem with volt regulator or my gauge, volts reading 15v dont want to take it in until i've had some suggestions from fellow ford enthusiasts. Any suggestions would be great.

I had a similar problem with my
'96 dodge Stratus..
The wiring from battery to the alternator is getting pretty bad..

I changed the wiring from the alternator to the battery..
the ground wire from the engine block to the chassis and the ground from the battery to the chassis..

all my problems went away.. till the alternator died.. (almost a year later)

so my suggestion is check the condition of the wiring. check for corrosion on the copper trainds.

With 15 Volts on the battery that means that the charging alternator is overcharging your battery
Max Voltage that you should see is while the engine is running about 14.5 volts
Anything above that your regulator is gone
Battery with the engine stoped should read about 13.5 volts

If I can remember correctly from school..
if it reaches 16 volts it will overcharge the battery..
14.5 is the norm.. but above 16 is overcharging..
you need a minimum of 13.6v to charge a battery..



when the engine is off the battery should sit about 12.6-12.7ish
12.7v - 100%
12.4v - 75%
12.2v - 50%
12.1v - 25%
