4x4 probs

Wouldn't you know it, cold, snow and ice and no four wheel drive! Been very icy and lots of snow here for past week or so and -32 with -42 wind chill yesterday morning. Have been sliding around lots and finally noticed last night that my four wheel drive not working. Put it in 4 hi and light comes on in dash but won't kick in. Going to check fuses, relays and IWE solenoid. Any other ideas?

Such is life. Just passing through.

Welcome to my world. Can you hear the relay in the dash click? I'd throw a new IWE solenoid on it and check the vacuum lines. If you're solenoid doesn't have the rain hood on it like the one on the right its worth the time to change it anyway.

It could ultimately be the IWE actuators at the wheels. Its easy to check those. With the engine off jack up both front wheels up and spin the wheel, the halfshaft should turn as their is no vacuum and the hubs should be locked. If it doesn't turn the actuators aren't working properly and locking.

Doesn't click. Turn knob to 4 hi and lights up on instrument cluster but that's it. Snowing again and no garage Ryan so will check the easy stuff first.

If the hubs aren't fully engaging another way to tell is when you engage 4wd while driving it will produce a grinding sound or sound like cards in a bicycle wheel. Hopefully its not the actuators being toast.

Went out to order my IWE solenoid and do a Timmie's run and as I was waiting in Timmie's drive through I switched to 4 hi and could hear the click in dash and 4 wheel worked. Sure nice to have on these roads! Beginning to think it is the solenoid and just not handling the vacuum properly.

There is something to be said for manual shift transfer cases.

Definetly. I just wish you could still get them in the new trucks still. Without having to get a base work truck model.

Mine is a dorman. I got it out of the states. It's super easy to change only 2 nuts. Mine is only held on with one now, I dropped one and never found it lol
