Thermostat Woes

Hey has anyone else had this happen to them? Truck pegged red hot in minus 36 with a 40 windchill. Blew the degas cap and found a hole in the upper rad hose under the snorkel. Wondering if this is the reason why my truck overheated. The truck is a 2005 5.4 3v heavy half ton with 230,000 km picked myself up a new hose thermostat o ring and upper rad hose, waiting the weather out until I dig back into it. Trucks been parked until she’s got the new parts in
