the 4.6 plugs don't seem to have the problem the 5.4 ones do, due to the 1 piece plug in the 4.6. hopefully some other members will chime in with any help

Does this same problem exist on teh 2002-3 year of the 5.4.
It sounds somewhat scary to attempt this at home in ths shop....do they always break?

no, this breakage problem only applies to the 5.4 in the new body style, 04-08
some trucks in the 97-03 style however, had reports of the v8 plugs occasionally blowing out of the heads due to not enough threads in the head. but it wasn't all that common. my 97 f150 has 170,000+ and the wifes expy had 100,000 km and neither hever had this prob.

Cheers
