No start mystery

This is one of those issues where no one seems to have an answer. This has happened the last two times I used my truck. My truck may sit for a week without being used. Although the temperature is -20 C, it was plugged in. I starts up just fine and I let it warm up for maybe 5 or 10 minutes. I turned it off and went back about 15 minutes later and turned the ignition - nothing. There appears to be power, lights come on and the blower fan works fine. However, I checked the battery voltage and it was only 11.9 volts. Put the charger on for about 20 minutes and it started just fine. Checked the charge rate and it was 14.6 volts. This has happened twice now. Took it to the garage, and they ran the full diagnostics, starter, alternator, battery, etc. and could find nothing. The battery is new and they load tested it three times with no issues. Does anynone have any idea how it could discharge after starting and running the first time? I think my only hope may be someone has had the identical problem.

are your battery terminals clean and the connections tight?

+1 on what taisa899 said.

Also, the times when it doesn't start -- when you turn the key to the start position, can you hear the starter solenoid clicking or rattling, or is it silent?

If it's quiet, this might suggest your starter solenoid is sticking. Next time it happens, give it a few light raps with a screwdriver handle. If that doesn't work, try bypassing the solenoid by jumpering across the two large studs, to see if you can start it that way.

I couldn't hear the solenoid clicking or rattling. The only noise I could hear was a very slight click and it seemed to be coming from the area of the fuse panel box or somewhere on the firewall.
As to the previous reply, the battery connections are clean and tight.

I asked the mechanic and he said the connections on the starter were good by I haven't check them myself. Guess I'll have to crawl underneath tomorrow and have a look.

could be internal in the starter....

I have a 6.0L but before xmas mine locked up and welded itself solid inside the houseing I had power everywhere but it also shorted out the system not enough to pop a fuse but my gauges went funky and interior lights would flash had the starter replaced and they sent it off to Ford.... tech has never seen a starter do that before at least not as bad as mine

Remote start? I had a similar issue but it's because of the remote start acting up. I have the dealer installed Ford remote start system.

I'm wondering why you would go out and start the truck let it run for 15 minutes and then shut it off and then go out in 20 minutes to start it again. If your that bored you need a new hobby rather than going back and forth to the truck starting it.
