Weird question about exhaust tone

4" MBRP turbo back cat delete exhaust installed awhile back:

When I start my truck up when it is cold the immediate exhaust note is quite deep and loud. After a few seconds (up to 6 or 7 depending on how cold it is) something changes and the engine makes a different noise and the deep tone in the exhaust is gone and replaced with more of a hissing air sound. If the truck is already warmed up and I start it up the deep tone changes to the hissing sound quite quickly (1-2 seconds).

Is this normal?

Can anyone explain?

Thanks, Dave

Additional info:
stock except for K&N and exhaust
did this from day 1
sounds completely different when I step into it going down the road though

Sounds like the EBPV kicking in....especially if you say it was from day one.

Oh, and it is normal in cold weather.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't so clear. I meant when the engine was cold. The weather has been up to the 30's (Celsius) here but the same thing happens everytime I start the truck. The deep tone just lasts a bit longer when the engine is cold.

Thanks for the info LOOSEWHEEL and BMac.

I asked a guy on my ball team this weekend and he told me my 6.0 L doesn't have a EBPV? He said the noise was just the vanes in the turbo and it is normal for my year with a turboback, cat delete exhaust.

I seem to be getting more confused. I really would like to get the deeper sound all the time. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Dave

oh snap, yeah sorry 6oh doesn't have EBPV, just the 7.3...yeah its a vgt turbo...you an get a tuner and talk with them they should be able to change the the pitch of the turbo vanes in different tunes to get what you want.

Thanks BMac,

I have a couple mods before I go that route, like APR studs and I have to get off my butt and do the EGR and valve delete. Soon I hope.
