Why?

Why are dust shields nesesary? My rear drivers side one keeps getting pebbles stuck in it and making a screeching noise, sounds like worn out brakes but it is always pebbles in the shield. My shield is pretty banged up and one part is only riveted on and is loose, can I just remove it? It's starting to be a PITA to take it all apart everytime I drive on a gravel road!!!!

I don't have any on my truck they had to be removed when the lift went in, I would say you should be able to remove them with no issues
