Winter tire law in Alberta?

I recently heard a rumor that by this Nov 2010 winter tires or at least snow flake rated tires will be mandatory for the winter in Alberta as well. Is this true? If so, anyone got any good winter tire recommendations?

Well, at the beginning of 2010, I had ordered a set of four General Altimax Arctic 245/75-16 from an online dealer in Quebec (total price was $664 shipped to my address in BC). Since it was a mild winter, I didn't bother putting them on. Was planning to stud them, but I have changed my mind. Got a set of four new rims from a local Ford dealer....hope that they fit the rear disc brakes (have read that there have been issues with the 2010 rear disc brakes).

i only run winter tires in the winter. all season tires are really only 3 season tires.
how would they enforce the law. i see cars in parking lots in the winter with BALD tires and cant imagine driving that in the winter.

Really? Its the Internet take it easy.

Simple. They'll enforce it the same way they enforce a lot of other laws: arbitrarily, and whenever it suits their fancy.

If anyone is considering winter tires don't overlook Nokians.I'm on my second set of dedicated Nokian winter tires and they're awesome.Just don't run them in the summer.

I'm with 97350. I run a set of Nokian Hakka LTs and they are the cat's meow. In Montreal they seem to be the tire of choice...if price isn't really that much of an issue.

This is incorrect. If it were true there would be an advertising/information campaign to advise everyone of such.

This legislation may be coming in the next few years due to insurance company lobby. It was introduced in 2008 in Quebec and the tire shops could not get enough supply of winter tires.

Prior to the winter tire law, Quebec residents were the highest % (or among the highest....well over 50%) of users that used winter tires in Canada.
