Aftermarket Deck Troubleshooting

Okay, I have a Pioneer AVH3500BHS DVD receiver that is connected via Pioneer cable to my iPod and also has XM satellite radio. Pretty much from the day I bought it, I have had issues with my iPod where I get static pops during playback and every now and again the iPod will just flat out lock up during playback. The audible pops only occur when on iPod input - satellite or terrestrial radio are both fine. We swapped the Pioneer iPod cable for new, no difference.

The deck has been back to Pioneer for service, with no change in operation. During this time I was running off of my old Alpine IDAX100 deck and didn't have a single hiccup in 8 weeks of operation.

The dealer took my deck, all my cables, harness and iPod and bench tested it for 3 days but couldn't reproduce the issue. Put the deck back in my truck and within 5 minutes of operation the issues return.

So, my question is this: let's suppose for argument's sake that there is a ground issue with my truck, and for some reason it only shows up in iPod mode, as it does seem to happen more often when I'm on the throttle. What changes can I make (larger negative cable?) to the factory wiring that might help this issue? I don't really want to purchase another iPod unit when I don't believe there is anything wrong with my current unit.

It's an old trick but try using a 1000uf 16vdc capacitor between the switched power and ground.

Thanks Destruction, I'll give that a try.

I spent some time with Google yesterday and it seems this is a common issue with Pioneer decks, and it has to do with RCA connections and a Pico fuse inside the deck that likes to blow. A quick fix is to ground the RCA connector. If that works I'll pull the deck and see if I can get the fuse replaced. I just don't understand why it only happens on the iPod input, but maybe it has something to do with the grounding of a USB cable (or lack thereof)

The capacitor will help level spikes and droops in the supply. The problem with bench testing is that your using a filtered supply so you don't get noise or variations in the power.
