Unhappy Engine swap????

Hello everybody,
I had just acquired a 1998 Ford F150 XLT 4.2 Litre AOD 4x2 through my late fathers estate. When I first brought the truck home the check engine light was on. Had a loss of power and was losing speed on highway. I replaced the catalytic convertors and the check engine light went off. Since then it appears that a head gasket (s) is gone as now it is blowing out white smoke and is leaking antifreeze out of the exhaust. I has since developed a knock that wasn't their prior. Any ideas, junk the motor???? I heard a 302 can be bolted in with change of motor mounts and is a direct bolt to the transmission. The engine is out of a 84 Merc Marquis (carburetor) Any ideas, keep, rebuild, swap or junk what do you think? I hate to get rid of it as it was my dads truck. Thanks

I would find the cause of loosing antifreeze and most likely just change the head gaskets or put in a 4.6/5.4 engine putting a 302 in will take too much work in wiring changes most likely

i would have to agree, also the triton family of eng makes more power with better milage than the older 5.0/5.8l you will need to change eng harness and pcm,(best bet is to find a write off with all needed parts)

a moments silence for the shelbyx,i hope her new owner enjoys as much.

Thanks for your reply any idea what the knocking may be. Is it a possibliltiy that it may be engine miss due to antifreeze in the cylinder?

the early 4.2l was notorios for coolant leaking from front cover into oilpan and washing out bearings.

has work been done on the engine before ? if its had coolent in the oil before but changed and repaired before anything happened the coolent could have done the damage to the bottom end bearings so down the road theyd fail early....

2.9 i had did this, bought the truck with a split head (common) rebuilt the top end in highschool 6months later the bottom end let go so had to pull motor PITA lol

You can but the bell housing on the tranny for the 4.2 is slightly different than the ones on the 4.6 or 5.4. Check the drivers side valve cover, there should be a sticker there with the engine build date. If its later than 01/15/98 then it has/had the updated gaskets. Sounds like the motor is showing symptoms of the dreaded hydrolock issue for these motors.

If you are looking for more detailed info/mods for the 4.2 check out www.v6f150.com. They have a whole section just for the hydrolock issue.

Whaddya mean I dont pay my bills?? Whydya think I'm broke!!
