FAILED E-TEST... IDEAS?

well failed the emissions test today. The CO% at curb idle was 3.79%, should be lower than 1%. The handbook says "excessively rich mixture". I don't think my o2 sensors have ever been replaced. I also had a really bad exhaust leak for a while, could that have screwed my CATS up? I drive a 97 f150 with the POS 4.2L LOL.

Any ideas? I don't want to drop $'s for over and over repairs to get a pass.

Thanks

If the O2s haven't been replaced now might be a good time, how many Kms on it? also if the cats are original might be time for some highflows or direct replacement. The good news about this is that if you take out the precats and the cats, take them to a scrap metal dealer you should get a nice chunk of $. Not as much as last year but it may help to pay for the new O2 and cats. Prolly get between $100-$150 for them. Last year I got $200 for mine but thats when the precious metals market was still high.

I think you can get a temp pass permit, depends on which province.

i have 116,800 km orignal motor. I have been wanting to do high flow cats for a long time but haven't yet. Will high flow's effect emissions very much?

I graduated from Stayner Collegiate. High flow cats will increase performance a significant amount

Not sure how they will affect the testing, I had mine installed after I passed my last one. Not sure if the O2s are good for 100000 miles or 100000 Kms. Mine got changed at about 240000 Kms.

also dump some methyl hydrate in the tank prior to testing and make sure the cats are hot!

I've heard of people failing the first test, and driving to another garage that's a couple of hours away and passing with flying colours.

I'm assuming that the "guaranteed to pass" products can still be found on the shelves of local Canadian Tire stores, I know of people that have used these as well.

You shouldn't have to spend much money at all to get a pass if you do a little research.
